What age to gamble online in the US

What age to gamble online? In every US state that licenses online casinos, the minimum age is 21. Lower ages of 18 apply only to certain other products in certain places, such as some state lotteries, daily fantasy contests and sports betting in New Hampshire and DC. An offshore casino's own age rule never overrides your state's law.

Key takeaways

  • State-licensed online casinos require players to be 21, including in Connecticut, Delaware and Michigan.
  • 18 is the age for some lotteries, some fantasy contests and sports betting in New Hampshire and DC.
  • Offshore casinos set their own rules: Silver Oak says 21, Miami Club says 18 or local age if higher, SlotoCash says 18+.
  • A casino's rule doesn't change state law, and casinos check age with ID before paying out.

What age to gamble online: the quick answer

If you want to play real-money casino games online through a state-licensed site, you must be 21. That is the rule in Connecticut, Delaware and Michigan on their regulators' own pages, and third-party summaries report 21 for New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia too. We have not verified Pennsylvania's figure on an official page, so check with its gaming control board.

For other forms of gambling the age depends on the product and the state. Our full gambling age by state table lists each state, and the questions hub collects related answers. If you are 18, 19 or 20, read can I play at 18 for a focused answer.

Online gambling age by type of game

Age limits are set product by product, not by a single national rule. No federal law sets one gambling age for everything; each state decides for the products it allows.

So an 18-year-old in New Hampshire may bet on sports with the state's licensed operator, while the same person in Michigan must wait until 21 for sports betting or online casino play but may enter fantasy contests at 18. The sports betting laws and daily fantasy laws pages explain how each product is regulated.

Legal online casino age in the seven licensing states

Only New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island license real-money online casinos. Federal law's carve-out for intrastate online wagers assumes the state requires age and location checks, so licensed sites verify both. See states with legal online casinos for operator lists and launch history.

  • Connecticut: the Department of Consumer Protection's legal gaming page (opens in a new tab) lists 21 for casinos and online casinos, and 18 for lottery, keno and fantasy.
  • Delaware: the state lottery's iGaming pages list 21 for online casino play.
  • Michigan: the Gaming Control Board's sports and internet betting FAQ (opens in a new tab) says you must be 21 to open an internet wagering account, and 18 for fantasy contests.
  • New Jersey: third-party industry summaries list 21.
  • Maine passed a tribal online casino law in January 2026 with a 21 age in its rules, but nothing had launched by October 2026 and a lawsuit is pending.

Why 21 is the usual casino age

Nevada's gaming statute, NRS 463.350 (opens in a new tab), prohibits gaming by anyone under 21, and every online licensing state with a verified age uses the same figure. Nevada itself does not license online casino games.

Lower ages appear where legislatures treated a product differently. New Hampshire's sports wagering law, RSA 287-I (opens in a new tab), sets 18, and the District of Columbia's lottery-run sports wagering lists 18 as well. Lotteries commonly use 18. These are deliberate choices for specific products, not a general 18 rule.

What age offshore casinos accept, and why it isn't the whole answer

Offshore casinos are not licensed by any US state, so they set their own age rules in their terms. Here is what our partners publish, or what third parties report.

A casino that accepts 18-year-olds in its terms has not made it lawful for an 18-year-old to play in any particular state. State law decides whether online casino play is allowed at all, and where it is licensed, 21 is the age. Silver Oak's terms and conditions (opens in a new tab) and Miami Club's Terms of Use (opens in a new tab) both defer to the local age where it is higher.

How casinos check your age online

Every casino asks for date of birth at sign-up, but the real check comes with identity verification, usually before the first withdrawal. Silver Oak's terms list government photo ID, a selfie with ID and a recent utility bill; SlotoCash's support pages ask for photo ID and a utility bill. Our answers on whether you need ID to play and what KYC is explain the process.

That means anyone under the casino's age, or under their state's age, who signs up anyway is likely to have winnings withheld and the account closed when documents show their real date of birth. False details also break every casino's terms.

How to check the gambling age that applies to you

  1. Identify the product: online casino, sports betting, lottery, fantasy contests or sweepstakes.
  2. Open your state's page in our state guides and find the regulator and age recorded there.
  3. Confirm on the regulator's own website, since ages and laws change.
  4. If the product is only offered offshore in your state, read what your state's law says about offshore play before anything else.
  5. Treat a casino's own minimum as a floor it sets for itself, never as permission.

Sweepstakes and social casinos: age and legality

Sweepstakes casinos use two currencies, Gold Coins for play and Sweeps Coins that can be redeemed for prizes. Several states have banned dual-currency sweepstakes casinos, including New York, New Jersey, California, Connecticut, Montana, Louisiana, Maine, Indiana, Tennessee and, from November 1, 2026, Oklahoma. Each brand sets its own minimum age, so check its terms. See sweepstakes casino laws for state detail.

If you are under 21 or worried about someone who is

Age limits are set in law to keep gambling away from young people. If you're under the age in your state, don't gamble online. If you're a parent or friend, our page on young people and gambling explains warning signs and blocking tools.

The National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), offers free, confidential call, text and chat around the clock for anyone affected, including family members.

Frequently asked questions

What is the legal age to gamble online in the US?

The legal age to gamble online at a state-licensed casino is 21. Some other products have lower ages in some states, such as 18 for certain lotteries, fantasy contests, and sports betting in New Hampshire and DC. There is no single federal gambling age. Our gambling age by state page shows what each state has recorded, and the regulator's site is the final word.

Can I gamble online at 18 anywhere in the US?

Only for specific products in specific places, never for state-licensed online casinos. New Hampshire allows sports betting at 18, DC's sports wagering lists 18, and several states set 18 for the lottery or fantasy contests. Online casino play in the licensing states requires 21. Our answer to can I play at 18 covers the details and the offshore question.

Why do some offshore casinos say 18+?

Offshore casinos write terms for many countries, and 18 is common outside the US. SlotoCash's terms say 18+, and Miami Club says 18 or the local age if higher. Neither rule changes US state law, which decides whether play is allowed and at what age. Our page on offshore casino legality explains how state law applies.

What age do you have to be for sports betting?

Usually 21, but it varies. Regulators in Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Tennessee and Vermont list 21, while New Hampshire and DC list 18. Sports betting is legal only where a state has authorized it. Check your state with our sports betting by state answer before opening any account.

What age do you need for daily fantasy sports?

Often 18, but not everywhere. Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio record 18 for fantasy contests, while Louisiana records 21. Fantasy contests are regulated separately from casinos, and some states don't allow paid contests at all. See our daily fantasy guide for how the contests work and how states treat them.

Does the casino check my age?

Yes, at the latest when you withdraw. Casinos ask for a date of birth at sign-up and then request ID during verification, usually before the first payout. Silver Oak's terms block withdrawals until photo ID, a selfie and proof of address are approved. Entering a false birth date breaks the terms. Our account verification guide explains the process step by step.

What is the age to buy lottery tickets online?

Where state lotteries sell online, the age is commonly 18. California, Connecticut, Georgia, Missouri, New Hampshire, Virginia, Rhode Island, West Virginia and DC record 18 for the lottery. Not every state sells tickets online, and age rules can differ for other lottery products. Our page on state lotteries online explains which states sell digitally.

What happens if I gamble online under age?

The casino will normally void winnings and close the account once verification shows your real age, and you may lose deposits under its terms. Breaking a state's age law can carry consequences too, depending on the state. If you're underage, wait. If gambling is already causing harm, our help and support page lists free, confidential services.

How old must you be to bet on sports in North Carolina?

In North Carolina you must be 21 for sports betting, and a third-party source reports 21 at the Eastern Band of Cherokee casinos under a compact amended in 2001. Sports wagering is the only legal online gambling: the state lottery commission licenses seven operators, and betting launched March 11, 2024. No online casino is authorized, and the commission says wagering outside the legal channels is illegal. The state’s problem gambling program, More Than A Game, answers at 877-718-5543. Our North Carolina online casinos hub and North Carolina sports betting page cover the details.

Is South Dakota’s gambling age 18 or 21?

Both, depending on the product: South Dakota’s Commission on Gaming lists 21 for casino gambling and for sports betting at Deadwood and tribal casinos, but 18 for simulcast horse racing. Sports betting there is retail only, approved by voters in 2020, and a 2026 amendment to allow statewide online betting died in a House committee after passing the Senate. No online casino is authorized, so players in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen have no state-licensed online casino at any age. The South Dakota Council on Problem Gambling is at 1-888-781-HELP. See our South Dakota hub and South Dakota gambling laws.

What is the online casino age in West Virginia?

West Virginia requires players to be 21 for online casino play, according to a 2026 news report citing state law, while the West Virginia Lottery lists 18 for lottery games. West Virginia is one of the seven states that license online casinos, under its Lottery Interactive Wagering Act, with up to five licenses allowed by statute. Licensed sites check age and location before you can play, and players in Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown must be inside the state. Offshore casinos aren’t among the state’s licensees. Our West Virginia online casinos hub and West Virginia gambling laws explain the system.

What is the minimum age to gamble online in Rhode Island?

Rhode Island sets 21 for its online casino, as reported by a third-party source, and 18 for the lottery on the Rhode Island Lottery’s own page. The state runs a monopoly model: Bally’s operates the only licensed online casino, which launched on March 5, 2024 under SB 948 of 2023. Its two land casinos are Bally’s Twin River Lincoln and Bally’s Tiverton. Any other online casino taking Rhode Island players isn’t state-licensed. The state helpline is 1-877-GAMBLE (1-877-942-6253). Read our Rhode Island hub and Rhode Island real money casinos page.

Can 18-year-olds gamble online in California?

No: California’s lottery lists 18, but there’s no legal online casino or sports betting in the state at any age. The state has tribal casinos and cardrooms, and age rules there weren’t confirmed in the sources checked, so ask the venue. Online, the choices are narrower than ever: AB 831 has banned dual-currency sweepstakes casinos since January 1, 2026, and offshore casinos aren’t licensed by California. An offshore site accepting an 18-year-old doesn’t make play lawful there. Our California gambling laws page and can I play online casinos in California answer cover the details.

Can I play at Miami Club Casino if I’m under 21?

Miami Club’s Terms of Use set 18, or the local legal gambling age if that’s higher, so in most US states the casino’s own rule points to 21. Its Terms of Use (v2.1, September 28, 2026, section 1.6) also list the United States as a prohibited jurisdiction, while the site owner’s affiliate program confirms US players are accepted, so confirm eligibility at sign-up. Miami Club is offshore and not licensed by any US state. We show its offer only to readers who are 21+, or 18+ where allowed. See the Miami Club review and Miami Club verification for how ID checks work.

How old do you have to be for a sweepstakes casino?

Each sweepstakes casino sets its own minimum age in its terms, and no state licenses these sites, so there’s no single legal age. The bigger question is whether the model is allowed where you live. New York, New Jersey, California, Connecticut, Montana, Louisiana, Maine, Indiana and Tennessee have banned dual-currency sweepstakes casinos, and Oklahoma’s ban took effect November 1, 2026. Read the brand’s age and redemption rules before you buy any coins, and remember a site’s own minimum is never permission under state law. Our sweeps coins answer explains the currencies, and which states ban sweepstakes casinos lists the bans.
