A casino slots bonus is extra credit or free spins that a casino gives you to play slot machines, and you must wager it a set number of times before any winnings can be withdrawn. This guide works out what a slots bonus really costs to clear in dollars, how RTP changes that number, and which published terms at offshore casinos matter most.

What a casino slots bonus is
A casino slots bonus is any promotion whose wagering can only be cleared, or is cleared fastest, on slot machines. In practice that covers most of what offshore casinos advertise to US players: the welcome bonus, deposit matches, free spins and many coded reloads.
Casinos favor slots for a simple reason. Slots carry a built-in house edge, usually somewhere around 3% to 5% on RealTime Gaming titles according to third-party RTP listings, and they can't be played with a strategy that cuts that edge. Blackjack and video poker can come close to break-even with good play, so casinos either exclude them or make them count for much less.
So when a casino calls an offer a slots bonus, read it as two things at once: a pile of extra credit, and an instruction about where that credit has to be spent. The rest of this page puts numbers on both.
A bonus is not cash. Until the wagering is finished, the bonus balance and anything won from it can be removed under the casino's terms.
Types of slots bonus at US-facing casinos
Slot promotions come in a handful of shapes. Each one handles wagering, caps and eligible games a little differently, so it pays to know which one you're looking at before you claim it.
Common slots bonus types and how they usually work
Bonus type
What you get
Usual catch
Deposit match
A percentage of your deposit as bonus credit, such as 200% of $100 = $200
Wagering on deposit plus bonus at many offshore casinos
Free spins
A set number of spins on one named slot
Wagering on spin winnings, and often a max cashout
Free chip (no deposit)
Small bonus credit with no deposit
Low max cashout, such as $100
Slot-only reload
A coded match on a later deposit
Codes change often; terms differ per code
Cashback on slot losses
A percentage of net losses returned
Cashback may carry its own wagering
Our guides to the no deposit bonus and reload bonus cover those formats in detail. Here the focus is on the shared rule: the credit has to go through slot reels before it becomes withdrawable.
Casino slots bonus math in real dollars
The number that matters is not the size of the bonus but the expected cost of clearing it. The formula is short: total wagering × house edge = expected loss while you clear the bonus. The house edge on a slot is 100% minus its RTP, so a 96% RTP slot has a 4% edge.
Take a $100 deposit with a 200% match, so $200 in bonus credit. If the wagering is 30x deposit plus bonus, you must place $300 × 30 = $9,000 in bets. At a 4% house edge, the average cost of those bets is $9,000 × 0.04 = $360. That is more than the $200 bonus, so on average this offer costs you money even before any max cashout bites.

These are averages over many sessions, not predictions. Real sessions swing a lot: you might hit a big feature early and finish with a balance, or lose the deposit and bonus long before the wagering is done. The expected value of a bonus guide and our bonus wagering requirements page walk through more cases.
How slot RTP and volatility change a slots bonus
RTP sets the average cost. Third-party listings put many RealTime Gaming slots at 95% to 97.5%: for example 95% for Bubble Bubble, 96.25% for Sweet 16 and Cash Bandits 2 (GamesHub's figure), and 97.5% for Coyote Cash. These are figures reported by review sites, not certified by the casinos, and an operator can sometimes run a different setting.
On $9,000 of wagering, the gap between 95% and 97.5% RTP is $450 versus $225 in expected losses. That makes RTP the single biggest lever a slot player controls when clearing a bonus. See how slot RTP works and our review of Sweet 16 or Coyote Cash for the published specs.
Volatility decides the ride, not the average. A high-volatility slot pays less often but in larger amounts, so your balance is more likely to hit zero before the wagering ends, while occasionally finishing well ahead. Low-volatility slots grind more steadily. Our slot volatility explained page shows the trade-off with a fixed budget.
No slot is "hot", "due" or "loose" during a bonus. Each spin is independent, and the house edge applies to every dollar you wager.
Max bet, eligible slots and excluded jackpots
Three rules sit inside almost every slots bonus, and breaking any of them can void your winnings.
Max bet.SlotoCash's welcome bonus terms (opens in a new tab) cap bets at $10 per spin while a bonus is active. Other casinos publish similar caps or leave them out; if the figure isn't published, ask support before you play.
Eligible games. SlotoCash's terms list slots, Real-Series video slots (excluding progressive jackpot slots), keno and scratch cards, and say play on other games voids promotion winnings. Third-party reviews report that Planet 7 bars Banana Jones and Fish Catch from coupon-code funds.
Excluded jackpots. Progressive jackpot slots are commonly excluded. Silver Oak's terms exclude progressive games, and SlotoCash's general terms exclude progressive jackpots by default.
A practical consequence: the slot you love may not count. Check the eligible list in the bonus game weighting rules before you spin, and keep each bet under the cap even when the game lets you go higher.

Read the bonus terms page first and note the multiple, the wagering base, the max bet, eligible slots, expiry and any max cashout.
Decide on a budget you can afford to lose in full, and set a deposit limit with support if the casino offers one.
Enter the bonus code exactly as shown at the cashier, before or right after depositing, as the terms require. Codes change often, so use the one shown at sign-up.
Pick an eligible slot with a published RTP you're comfortable with and a bet size well under the max bet.
Track your wagering progress in the account area or by asking support, and stop if you reach your budget.
Once wagering is complete, complete verification (ID and proof of address) before requesting a withdrawal.
Some clauses turn a large headline into a small result. Watch for these:
A wagering base of deposit plus bonus combined with a multiple above 30x.
A max cashout that is low next to the bonus, such as $100 on a free chip or $200 on free bonuses at SlotoCash under its general terms.
Conflicting figures between the promotion page and the general terms, as with Silver Oak's 30x and 40x.
Weekly withdrawal caps that stretch out a big win: $2,500 a week is commonly reported at Silver Oak, Planet 7, Royal Ace and Slot Madness, and SlotoCash's banking page says $5,000 a week.
No expiry date published at all, which leaves the casino free to set one.
Online casinos are licensed by the state only in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Elsewhere, no state licenses online slots, and the casinos advertising slots bonuses to US players are offshore. Our states with legal online casinos page lists each regulator.
Our partners are offshore and not licensed or regulated by any US state. That means no state regulator to complain to, no state-backed protection of your balance, and bonus terms the casino writes and can change. Michigan's Gaming Control Board has sent cease-and-desist letters naming several of them: Silver Oak and Planet 7 in its April 9, 2025 release (opens in a new tab), Slot Madness on August 14, 2025, and SlotoCash on October 8, 2026, calling them illegal offshore operators.
Whether you may play depends on your state's law, so read the summary for your state on our states hub and the offshore casinos legality explainer. Gambling winnings are also taxable federal income.

Frequently asked questions
What is a casino slots bonus?
A casino slots bonus is bonus credit or free spins that must be wagered on slot machines before winnings can be withdrawn. Most offshore welcome offers work this way because slots count 100% toward wagering, while table games are excluded or count less. The bonus usually carries a multiple such as 25x or 40x, a max bet and a list of eligible games. Our bonuses hub explains the other bonus formats.
How much do I have to bet to clear a slots bonus?
You multiply the wagering base by the multiple. With a $100 deposit, a $200 bonus and 30x deposit plus bonus, you must bet $300 × 30 = $9,000. If the same multiple applies to the bonus alone, the total drops to $6,000. Always confirm the base in the terms, because it changes the total more than the headline percentage does. Our wagering requirements explained guide has more worked examples.
Which slots are best for clearing a bonus?
Slots with a higher published RTP cost less on average to clear a bonus, as long as they are on the eligible list. At $9,000 of wagering, a 97.5% RTP slot has an expected cost of $225 versus $450 at 95%. RTP figures for RealTime Gaming titles come from third-party listings, so check the game's info screen. See what is RTP and our slot reviews.
Can I play progressive jackpot slots with a slots bonus?
Usually not, because many casinos exclude progressive jackpot slots from bonus play. Silver Oak's terms list progressive games among not-allowed games, and SlotoCash's general bonus terms exclude progressive jackpots by default. Playing an excluded game with an active bonus can void winnings. If you want to chase a jackpot, consider playing without a bonus; our progressive jackpot entry explains how these prizes are funded.
Are free spins the purest slots bonus?
Yes, free spins are the purest form of slots bonus, since they can only be used on the slot the casino names. Winnings from the spins usually become bonus credit with their own wagering, and some offers add a max cashout. The game for the spins in our partner links isn't always published, so check the offer at sign-up. Our free spins winnings page shows how the money is calculated.
Is a bigger slots bonus always better?
No, a bigger slots bonus is often worse once you count the wagering it creates. A 200% match at 30x deposit plus bonus requires more betting, and a higher expected loss, than a 100% match at the same multiple. Max cashout caps and weekly withdrawal limits can also shrink what you take home. Compare offers using the steps on comparing casino bonuses.
What happens if I bet more than the max bet with a slots bonus?
Betting above the max bet usually lets the casino void the bonus and any winnings made with it. SlotoCash's welcome terms set the cap at $10 per spin while a bonus is active, and other casinos publish their own figures. The safest approach is to keep every bet well under the cap. Our bonus abuse rules page lists other clauses that trigger confiscation.
Are slots bonuses at offshore casinos legal in the US?
Offshore casinos are not licensed by any US state, so their bonuses carry no state protection, and whether you may play depends on your state's law. Only seven states license real-money online casinos. Michigan's regulator has named several offshore brands, including some of our partners, in cease-and-desist letters. Read your state's page on our states hub and the offshore casinos legality guide before signing up.
Can I use a slots bonus on keno or scratch cards?
Often yes, because many slot-focused bonuses also count keno and scratch cards in full. SlotoCash's welcome terms list slots, Real-Series video slots, keno and scratch cards as eligible, and Miami Club's terms count keno, scratch cards and regular slots at 100%. Silver Oak applies its 40x slots rate to keno, bingo and scratch cards too. RTG keno's RTP isn't published in the listings we use, so you can't work out its clearing cost the way you can for a slot with a known RTP. Check our best keno casinos list before switching games.
Does Miami Club have a slots bonus?
Yes, Miami Club's welcome package works as a slots bonus: 100% up to $100 on each of the first eight purchases, up to $800 on its own site, at 20x deposit plus bonus. Regular slots count 100%, and the max bet is $2 per pay-line or $10 per single wager, with bonus buys counted. The offer via our link is $4,000 + 285 Bonus Games. It runs WGS (Wager Gaming) slots rather than RTG. Terms of Use section 1.6 lists the United States as prohibited, while its affiliate program confirms US players are accepted. See our Miami Club slots page.
Which slots can I play with Planet 7's bonus?
Planet 7 runs RealTime Gaming software, and third-party reviews say its WELCOME200 bonus is cleared on slots at 30x deposit plus bonus. The same reviews say two titles, Banana Jones and Fish Catch, can't be played with coupon-code funds, and that winnings on them are void. Planet 7's own site wasn't the source for these terms, so check the eligible list in the cashier or ask live chat before you start. Progressive jackpots are commonly excluded at RTG casinos too. Our Planet 7 slots page covers its lobby.
How many spins does it take to clear a slots bonus?
Divide the total wagering by your bet size: the smaller the stake, the more spins you need. Decode's DECODE111 on a $100 deposit, reported at 25x deposit plus bonus, needs $5,275 in bets, which is 10,550 spins at $0.50 or about 2,638 spins at $2. The expected cost is the same either way, since it depends on total wagering, but larger bets swing harder and can end the balance sooner. Keep bets under any max bet. Our bankroll management guide helps you pick a stake.
Is there a slots bonus for progressive jackpot games?
Yes, but rarely, since most bonuses exclude progressives. A 2025 third-party review lists Slot Madness's PROGRESSIVE100 code as a 100% match for progressive jackpot games, with deposits of $30 to $1,000 and a 10x max cashout, and a separate MAD100 code with a $30 minimum. A 10x cap means a jackpot won with bonus funds would be cut to a fraction of its value. These terms aren't on the casino's own site, so confirm with support. Our Slot Madness jackpots page lists its progressive titles.
Are online slots bonuses legal in North Carolina?
North Carolina doesn't license online casinos, and its Lottery Commission says wagering outside the legal channels is illegal, so no slots bonus there comes from a state-regulated site. Online sports betting has been legal since March 11, 2024, with seven licensed operators. In-person slots are available at tribal casinos, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee's two properties, where the age is reported as 21. The state also banned electronic sweepstakes machines in 2010. Read our North Carolina slots page before playing anywhere online.
