What is RTP? Return to player is the percentage of all money bet on a game that it's designed to pay back over a very large number of plays. A 96% RTP slot returns $96 for every $100 wagered in the long run, so the house keeps about $4. It describes the long-run average, not what will happen in your session.
RTP is the long-run share of wagers a game pays back; the house edge is 100% minus RTP.
Expected loss = total amount bet × house edge, so $1,000 of spins at 96% RTP costs $40 on average.
RTP says nothing about a single session; volatility decides how bumpy the ride is.
Published RTPs for RTG games come from third-party sources and can vary by version, so check the game's help screen where it's shown.

What is RTP? A plain-English definition
RTP, or return to player, is a game's built-in payback rate. It's worked out by dividing everything a game is expected to pay out by everything wagered on it, across millions of rounds. A slot with a 95% RTP is designed to pay back $95 of every $100 bet over its lifetime.
The other side of RTP is the house edge: 100% minus the RTP. That's the share the casino expects to keep. This page, part of our casino questions hub, shows how to turn RTP into dollars, what it can't tell you, and where the published numbers for RealTime Gaming games come from. Our RTP glossary entry has the one-line version.
RTP in dollars: what a game costs you
The simplest way to use RTP is the expected loss formula: total amount bet × house edge. Total amount bet means every spin added up, not your deposit. Fifty dollars recycled through a slot can easily become $500 or more in total bets.

If you spin $1 a time and play 400 spins in an hour, that's $400 in bets. At 95% RTP the expected cost is $20 an hour; at 97.5% it's $10. These are averages. Your hour could end well up or well down, but the longer you play, the closer your results tend to drift toward the house edge. Our house edge guide runs the same sums for table games.

RTP vs volatility: why two 96% slots feel different
RTP tells you the average; volatility tells you how wins are spread. A low-volatility slot pays smaller amounts more steadily. A high-volatility slot can go a long time without much, then pay a large win. Both can have the same RTP.
With a $50 budget, that difference matters more than a point of RTP. On a high-volatility game like Rudolph's Revenge, $1 spins can use up $50 quickly before a feature lands; dropping to $0.25 spins gives you four times as many spins from the same money. Our answer on what volatility is and the slot volatility guide explain more.
What RTP can't tell you
Your result today. RTP is measured over millions of rounds; a single session can land anywhere.
How often you'll win. Two games with the same RTP can pay out very differently from spin to spin.
Whether a machine is "due". Each spin is independent, and past losses don't raise the next payout. See our page on the hot and cold slots myth.
Which version a casino runs. Where a game has an RTP range, the figure at your casino may differ from a catalog listing.
How much of the return sits in a jackpot. On progressive games, part of the return may come from a top prize few players ever win.
No betting system changes RTP. Raising your stake after losses only increases the total bet, and the expected loss grows with it.
How RTP affects the cost of a casino bonus
RTP is the key number when you work out what wagering will cost. Take a $100 deposit with a $100 bonus at 30x, which needs $6,000 in bets. At 96.25% RTP the expected loss is $225; at 94% it's $360, more than the whole $200 balance. A higher-RTP eligible slot makes a bonus cheaper to clear on average.
Third-party reviewers report that RTG games are tested by Technical Systems Testing (TST), according to LCB's RTG profile (opens in a new tab) and another review site. One review of Planet 7 says its software is tested by GLI. None of these checks is overseen by a US state.
In the seven states that license online casinos, such as Michigan and New Jersey, games run under state regulator oversight. Offshore casinos aren't part of that system, so you rely on the software provider, the casino and any independent tester. Our page on whether RTG games are fair covers this in more detail.

Frequently asked questions
What does RTP mean in slots?
RTP means return to player: the share of all money wagered that a slot is designed to pay back over the long run. A 96% RTP slot returns about $96 per $100 bet across millions of spins, keeping $4 as the house edge. It isn't a promise for any session. Our how slot RTP works guide explains the math.
Is a higher RTP better?
Yes, on average a higher RTP costs you less per dollar bet. On $1,000 of total bets, a 97.5% game has an expected loss of $25 against $50 at 95%. It doesn't make winning likely, and volatility still shapes each session. Compare games on our best high RTP casinos list and RTG game reviews.
What is a good RTP for an RTG slot?
Many RTG slots are listed between 95% and 97.5% by third-party sources, so anything in that range is typical for the provider. Some titles fall lower, such as Aladdin's Wishes at 93%, and a few are higher, like Swindle All the Way at 98.5%. Check the specific game. Browse our slot reviews for listed figures.
Does RTP change if I keep losing?
No. RTP is fixed by the game's design and each spin is independent, so a run of losses doesn't make a win more likely. A slot is never "due". Believing otherwise leads to chasing losses. Our pages on the gambler's fallacy and chasing losses explain why this belief is costly.
What's the difference between RTP and house edge?
They're two sides of the same number. RTP is the share paid back to players; house edge is the share the casino keeps, equal to 100% minus RTP. A 97.3% RTP European Roulette game has a 2.7% house edge. Table games are often described by house edge, slots by RTP. See the house edge glossary entry.
Can a casino change a slot's RTP?
Some games are offered in more than one RTP setting. Third-party catalogs list RTG's 777 with an RTP range and Jackpot Piñatas Deluxe at "up to 96.5%", so the version at a given casino may differ from a listing. Check the game's help screen where it's shown, or ask support. Our page on whether slots are rigged online covers fairness concerns.
Which casino game has the highest RTP?
Among RTG games in third-party listings, the blackjack variant Super 21 scores highest at 99.6%, followed by Jacks or Better video poker at 99.54% and Suit 'Em Up Blackjack at 99.51%, all assuming optimal strategy. These figures need perfect play, and real results are usually lower. Video poker is also often weighted low or excluded for bonus wagering, so check the terms first. See our video poker strategy guide.
Does RTP matter for a casino bonus?
Yes, it largely sets what clearing a bonus costs on average. Expected loss is total wagering times the house edge, so $6,000 of bets costs $225 at 96.25% RTP and $360 at 94%. Higher-RTP eligible slots usually leave more of the balance. Our page on bonus wagering requirements shows the full calculation.
Where do I find a slot's RTP at an online casino?
The most reliable place to find a slot's RTP is the game's own help or paytable screen at the casino you're using, where one is shown. That figure applies to the version installed there, which matters because some RTG games come in more than one setting. If no RTP appears, ask the casino's support team in writing and save the reply. Third-party catalogs are the next best source, but RealTime Gaming's own site couldn't be checked to confirm them. Our Bubble Bubble RTP answer walks through these checks step by step, and how to read casino terms helps with the rest.
Is RTP the same thing as a slot's payout percentage or payback?
Yes, in everyday use RTP, payout percentage and payback all describe the same idea: the share of total wagers a game returns over the long run. A slot called a 96% payout game is a 96% RTP game, with a 4% house edge. Be careful with casinos that advertise a site-wide payout figure, because that blends every game and stake together and says little about the slot in front of you. Check the RTP of the specific title. See the payback glossary entry and our guide to casino math basics.
What is the RTP of blackjack at RTG casinos?
RTG blackjack games are listed with some of the highest RTPs in the catalog, provided you use correct strategy. Third-party sources list Super 21 at 99.6% and Suit 'Em Up Blackjack at 99.51%, while Blackjack + Perfect Pairs ranges from 95.9% to 99.59% depending on the bet. No figure was found for RTG's standard blackjack. Mistakes push the real return lower. On $1,000 of bets at 99.6%, the expected loss is $4. Learn the plays in our blackjack basic strategy guide and see the house edge on blackjack.
What RTP do RTG video poker games have?
RTG video poker RTPs range from about 93% to 99.5% in third-party listings, so the game you pick matters a lot. Jacks or Better is listed at 99.54% and Loose Deuces at 99.07% with optimal play, while Sevens Wild sits at just 93.15%. Deuces Wild is shown as 97% to 99%, depending on the version. Those top figures assume perfect strategy, and casinos often weight video poker low for bonus wagering. Compare titles in the best video poker game and our video poker strategy guide.
Does a slot's RTP include its progressive jackpot?
Often part of a progressive slot's return sits in the jackpot, but the sources we rely on rarely say how much. That matters because a top prize few players ever win can make up a slice of the listed RTP, so the everyday return for most players is lower than the headline. Aztec's Millions, listed at 94%, and Swindle All the Way, at 98.5%, both carry progressives. If the casino doesn't say what its figure covers, treat it as approximate. Read progressive jackpots explained and how often jackpots hit.
How is RTP checked at licensed casinos in New Jersey?
In New Jersey, online casino games run under the oversight of the Division of Gaming Enforcement, the state regulator that issues internet gaming permits to Atlantic City casino licensees and their partners. Offshore RTG casinos sit outside that system, so their RTPs rely on the software provider and independent testers that third parties name, such as TST. New Jersey law also makes running an unregulated online casino for state users a crime. See our New Jersey online casinos guide and the comparison of player protections offshore vs licensed.
