Casino sticky bonus explained

A casino sticky bonus is bonus money you can play with but never withdraw: when you cash out, the bonus amount is deducted and only the rest is paid. Casinos rarely use the word "sticky"; they write "non-cashable" or say the bonus is removed from withdrawals. This guide shows how that changes what you take home, with dollar examples.

Key takeaways

  • A sticky (non-cashable) bonus stays in your balance for play, then is subtracted when you withdraw.
  • Silver Oak's terms say its deposit bonus is non-cashable and removed from withdrawal amounts.
  • Sticky is not the same as a max cashout cap, though some offers have both.
  • Partner casinos are offshore and not licensed by any US state; check your state's law first.

What a casino sticky bonus is

A sticky bonus "sticks" to your account. You can wager it like real money, and wins made with it are yours once the wagering is done, but the bonus credit itself is never paid out. At withdrawal, the casino takes the original bonus amount off the top.

You'll also see it called a non-cashable or phantom bonus, and it can apply to almost any format on our casino bonuses hub, from deposit matches to free chips. The sticky bonus definition in our glossary gives the short version; this page is about the money. If you're comparing offers, read it alongside our non-sticky bonus guide, since the two behave very differently when you're ahead.

Many casino terms never use the word "sticky". Silver Oak's terms, for example, describe the same mechanism as a non-cashable bonus without using the word.

Sticky vs non-sticky casino bonus at a glance

How sticky and non-sticky bonuses differ
QuestionSticky (non-cashable)Non-sticky (cashable)
Can the bonus amount itself be withdrawn? No, it is deducted at cashoutYes, after wagering
Which money is played first?Usually one combined balanceYour deposit first, bonus after
Can you leave early with deposit wins?Usually not without meeting the bonus termsOften yes, by forfeiting the bonus
Where it's commonDeposit matches, no-deposit chips, "no rules" dealsSome welcome and reload offers
Main effectLowers every payout by the bonus amountGives an exit before the bonus is touched

The practical difference shows when you win early. With a sticky bonus your balance is locked to the bonus rules from the first spin. With a non-sticky one, a win on your own cash can usually be withdrawn by giving up the bonus. Check which model applies before you deposit, because terms vary by casino and by promotion.

Casino sticky bonus math: what you actually withdraw

Take a $100 deposit with a 100% match: $100 in bonus, $200 to play with. Assume the wagering is finished and the casino's rule matches Silver Oak's published terms, where the bonus is removed from the withdrawal and the request must exceed the deposit plus the bonus.

Payouts on a $100 deposit + $100 sticky bonus after wagering
Balance when you cash outBonus removedAmount paidSame balance with no bonus taken
$0–$0Depends on play
$180Request must exceed $200Not eligible yet$180
$250$100$150$250
$600$100$500$600
$1,200$100$1,100$1,200

Two things follow. The bonus never reaches your pocket, so its real worth is the extra playing time it gives you while wagering. And the removal costs the most in percentage terms on small wins: $100 off a $250 balance is 40%, while $100 off $1,200 is about 8%.

Expected cost still applies on top. If the requirement is 40x the $100 bonus, that's $4,000 in bets, which at a 4% slot house edge costs $160 on average, more than the bonus itself. See the expected value of a bonus for the full method.

Sticky bonus math at three deposit sizes

With a sticky bonus, a bigger deposit raises the bar you must clear before any withdrawal at all. This example uses Silver Oak's published structure, a 100% match with a non-cashable bonus and a withdrawal that must exceed deposit plus bonus, with 40x applied to the bonus alone and a 4% slot edge.

A 100% sticky match at $50, $200 and $500 (illustration on Silver Oak's published rules)
DepositBonusWagering at 40x bonusExpected cost at 4%Balance needed to withdrawBonus removed at cashout
$50$50$2,000$80Over $100$50
$200$200$8,000$320Over $400$200
$500$500$20,000$800Over $1,000$500

At every size, the expected cost of wagering is larger than the bonus, and the bonus then comes off the top. A $500 deposit needs a balance above $1,000 just to qualify for a payout, and $500 of that is taken back. If the 40x turns out to apply to deposit plus bonus, double the wagering column.

Smaller deposits keep both the bar and the cost down. Our $10 deposit casinos list, the bonus value calculator method and the Silver Oak welcome bonus page help you size the decision.

How to spot a sticky bonus in casino terms

Search the bonus terms for these phrases. Any one of them points to a sticky structure:

  • "Bonus amount is non-cashable" or "bonus funds are not withdrawable".
  • "Will be removed from" or "deducted from" the withdrawal amount.
  • A minimum withdrawal tied to the deposit plus bonus, such as "must exceed the sum of the deposit and the bonus".
  • Phantom bonus or "for wagering purposes only".

If none of these appear, the bonus may be cashable, or the terms may simply be silent. Silence isn't an answer, so ask support and save the reply. Our how to read casino terms guide shows where these lines usually sit.

A real example: Silver Oak's non-cashable rule

Silver Oak's terms and conditions (opens in a new tab), checked on October 28, 2026, are the clearest published example among our partners. Section 6.3 says the deposit bonus amount is non-cashable and will be removed from withdrawal amounts, and that a withdrawal request must exceed the sum of the deposit and the bonus. Section 6.11 applies the same non-cashable rule to its "No Rules" bonuses, which carry a 1x playthrough.

The same terms treat cashback differently. Sections 6.4 and 6.5 say weekly and monthly cashback are cashable and are not removed from withdrawals. So at one casino, a match bonus behaves as sticky while cashback behaves as cash. Our cashback bonus page covers that format.

Silver Oak's no-deposit codes (SILVER25, SILVER50 and FREESILVER, per its promotions page) add a cap: the terms limit withdrawals from a no-deposit bonus to 1x the bonus, with a $100 minimum, and the offer page says $100 max cashout. The full picture is in our Silver Oak review.

For SlotoCash and Decode, the honest answer is that their published terms don't say whether the bonus amount is removed, so treat it as unknown and ask support before depositing. Our SlotoCash review and Decode review list what is published.

Sticky bonus vs max cashout: two different rules

People mix these up. A sticky rule removes a fixed amount, the bonus, from what you withdraw. A max cashout rule caps the total you may withdraw from a bonus, and anything above the cap is forfeited.

Example: a $50 free chip that is sticky with a $100 max cashout. Finish wagering with $400 and the cap cuts it to $100 first; whether the $50 chip then also comes off depends on how the terms are written. That's why the max cashout explained guide recommends reading both clauses together.

Sticky bonus mistakes that cost players money

  • Counting the bonus as yours. A $1,200 balance with a $100 sticky bonus is really $1,100 at cashout.
  • Requesting a withdrawal below the bar. At Silver Oak, a request must exceed deposit plus bonus or it isn't eligible.
  • Mixing up sticky and capped. A free chip can be both, so read the non-cashable line and the max cashout line together.
  • Assuming cashback works the same way. Silver Oak's cashback is cashable while its match bonuses aren't.
  • Taking a sticky bonus to play table games. Heavier multiples and exclusions make clearing slow and costly.
  • Ignoring an unplayed-deposit fee. If you skip the bonus at Silver Oak, wager the deposit at least once, or an 8% fee (minimum $4) applies to the withdrawal.
  • Depositing again to rescue a balance. A new deposit often brings a new sticky bonus and a higher withdrawal bar, not a fresh start.

Each of these comes from rules already published on this page. Our bonus terms red flags checklist and the guide to why a bonus was removed help if a payout looks smaller than expected.

How to handle a sticky bonus step by step

  1. Read the bonus terms and note the words "non-cashable", "removed" or "deducted".
  2. Write down the wagering multiple, the base, the max bet and any max cashout.
  3. Work out the minimum balance you'd need for a withdrawal to be worth it after the bonus is removed.
  4. Decide whether you would rather play without the bonus; a coded bonus is only added if you enter the code.
  5. If you accept, play eligible games only and keep bets under the cap.
  6. When wagering is complete, verify your account and request the withdrawal, expecting the bonus amount to come off.

Sticky bonuses at offshore casinos and US law

Only New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island license real-money online casinos, and their regulators review bonus terms. Offshore casinos set their own terms, including whether bonuses are cashable, and can change them.

Our partners are offshore and not licensed by any US state, so there's no state regulator to settle a dispute over a removed bonus. Michigan's Gaming Control Board named Silver Oak in its April 9, 2025 release (opens in a new tab) and SlotoCash in its October 8, 2026 release (opens in a new tab), calling the operators it named illegal offshore operators. Read your state's rules on our states hub and the player protections offshore vs licensed comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What does sticky mean on a casino bonus?

A sticky bonus is bonus credit you can wager but never withdraw; the bonus amount is deducted when you cash out. Winnings made with it can be withdrawn once wagering is met, minus the original bonus. Casino terms usually call this a non-cashable bonus. Our what is a sticky bonus answer gives a quick summary.

Can I withdraw a sticky bonus?

No, the bonus amount itself can't be withdrawn; only your balance above it can. On a $100 sticky bonus with a $600 balance after wagering, about $500 would be paid. Some casinos also require the withdrawal to exceed the deposit plus bonus. See can I withdraw a bonus for the different bonus types.

Is a sticky bonus bad?

Not necessarily bad, but it's worth less than an equal cashable bonus. It gives extra playing time, yet the bonus amount comes off every payout, and the wagering still has an expected cost from the house edge. It suits players who value longer sessions more than a cash exit. Compare with our non-sticky bonus guide.

Does Silver Oak have sticky bonuses?

Silver Oak's terms describe the same mechanism without using the word sticky: its deposit bonus amount is non-cashable and removed from withdrawals. Its "No Rules" bonuses work the same way, while weekly and monthly cashback is cashable and isn't removed. The Silver Oak bonus terms page has the full detail.

Is a no-deposit bonus sticky?

Often it is, and it usually has a max cashout as well. Silver Oak's terms cap no-deposit withdrawals at 1x the bonus with a $100 minimum, and SlotoCash's general terms cap free bonus cashouts at $200. Read both the cashable rule and the cap. Our no deposit bonus guide explains these offers.

How is a sticky bonus different from max cashout?

A sticky rule removes the bonus amount from your withdrawal, while a max cashout caps the total you can withdraw from a bonus. One subtracts a fixed sum; the other sets a ceiling on the total. Some offers, especially free chips, use both. Our max cashout rules page shows how caps are applied in dollars.

Can I cancel a sticky bonus?

Usually you can ask support to cancel it, but canceling typically forfeits the bonus and any winnings tied to it. Whether your deposit balance is returned depends on the terms. Ask before you start playing, since canceling mid-wager is often costlier. See can I cancel a bonus for the general rules.

Are sticky bonuses common at US offshore casinos?

They appear regularly, though the terms rarely use the word sticky. Silver Oak publishes a non-cashable rule; SlotoCash and Decode don't state either way in their published terms. Offshore casinos aren't licensed by any US state, so check your state's law and the best sticky bonus casinos page for more context.

Is SlotoCash's welcome bonus sticky?

SlotoCash's published bonus terms don't say whether the bonus amount is removed at withdrawal, so treat it as unknown until support confirms. What the terms do state is 25x deposit plus bonus, a $20 minimum per bonus, a $10 max bet and no max cashout on the welcome series, with a 90-day validity in the general terms. Free bonuses, by contrast, carry a $25 minimum and $200 maximum cashout. Ask live chat whether the bonus comes off your payout and save the reply. Our SlotoCash welcome bonus page sets out every stage.

Is Miami Club's welcome bonus sticky?

Miami Club's bonus terms, as recorded, don't say whether the bonus amount is deducted at cashout, so ask support before you deposit. They do set 20x deposit plus bonus on matches of 100% or less, no expiry and no stated cashout cap for deposit bonuses, and the published package is 100% up to $100 on each of eight purchases. The $4,000 + 285 Bonus Games headline is the offer via our link. Terms of Use section 1.6 lists the United States as prohibited, while its affiliate program confirms US players are accepted. See our Miami Club welcome bonus page.

What is a 'No Rules' bonus at Silver Oak?

It's a bonus type with a very light 1x playthrough that Silver Oak still treats as non-cashable, so the bonus amount comes off your withdrawal. That makes it a clear sticky example: wagering is easy, but the credit itself never reaches your pocket. On a $100 'No Rules' bonus, you'd bet $100 once, then lose the $100 from any payout. The terms place it in section 6.11, beside the main non-cashable rule in 6.3. Codes change, so check the current list on our Silver Oak bonus codes page.

Can I play blackjack with a sticky bonus at Silver Oak?

You can play some table games, but Silver Oak's terms make it costly: blackjack and video poker carry 60x wagering against 40x on slots, and many games are excluded. Baccarat, craps, roulette, pai gow poker, sic bo, War, live dealer games and progressives can't be played with the welcome bonus. On a $100 bonus, 60x means $6,000 in blackjack bets, and the bonus is still removed at withdrawal. Many table players are better off skipping the code. Our Silver Oak table games page lists what's available.

Does a sticky bonus change the weekly withdrawal limit?

No, withdrawal limits apply on top of the sticky rule, whether or not you took a bonus. Weekly payouts at Silver Oak start at $2,500, raised by VIP level, and its terms add a monthly limit of $5,000 if your balance is at least 10 times your total deposits, or $10,000 otherwise. The bonus is deducted first, then the remainder is paid within those limits. An 8% fee (minimum $4) applies if a deposit wasn't wagered once. Our casino withdrawal limits page explains how installments work.

What happens to a sticky bonus when my balance hits zero?

If your balance runs out, the bonus simply ends; nothing is deducted because there's nothing left to pay. The sticky rule only matters when you finish wagering with money to withdraw. Some casinos spell out the end point: Miami Club's terms say a balance below $1 clears the wagering, letting you start afresh with a new deposit. Treat an empty balance as the end of the session rather than a reason to deposit again. Our guide to chasing losses explains why topping up after a loss is risky.

Are sticky bonuses at offshore casinos legal in Arizona?

Arizona doesn't license online casinos, and the Arizona Department of Gaming said in March 2025 that online casinos are illegal there and that claims otherwise should be treated as highly suspicious. It adds that unregulated sites are outside its authority, so victims have little chance of recovering funds. Legal gambling includes event wagering and 24 Class III tribal casinos. Arizona's Division of Problem Gambling runs 1-800-NEXT-STEP (1-800-639-8783). Read our Arizona gambling laws page before playing anywhere online.
