Online Match Play 21 is a RealTime Gaming blackjack variant that, in its standard form, removes the four 10-spot cards from every deck and pays you back with player-friendly rules and bonus payouts. RTG doesn't publish its rule card or RTP in the sources we rely on, so this page explains the standard rules, shows the math and tells you what to confirm on the game's help screen.
Match Play 21 is listed among RTG table games, but no RTP or rule card for RTG's version is published in the sources available.
Under standard rules, decks lose their four 10s, so blackjacks come less often (about 4.2% of hands versus 4.7%).
The house edge computed for standard rules is roughly 0.4% to 0.8% with perfect strategy, depending on whether the dealer hits soft 17.
None of our partner casinos is confirmed to carry Match Play 21, and most welcome bonuses limit or exclude table games.
Every partner below is offshore and not licensed by any US state; check your state's law first.

What is online Match Play 21?
This is a blackjack game in which, under the standard rule set, every deck is stripped of its four 10-spot cards. Jacks, queens and kings stay, so 10-value cards still exist, just fewer of them. To make up for the weaker deck, the game hands the player a list of extras that ordinary online blackjack doesn't offer.
If you already know the RTG and SpinLogic software lobbies, Match Play 21 sits beside titles like Super 21, Face Up 21 and Caribbean 21. Each one bends standard blackjack in a different direction, which is why their odds aren't interchangeable. Our casino games hub covers every RTG table game we review.
Match Play 21 rules: the standard format
The table below sets out the rules most often attached to this style of game. Treat it as a checklist, not a description of RTG's exact version: a single changed rule, such as the dealer hitting soft 17, moves the house edge noticeably.

Read the doubling and surrender rules carefully. Some versions let you surrender after doubling, giving up the original bet but keeping the double. That option sounds small, but it changes which hands are worth doubling.
Match Play 21 bonus payouts and the 21-always-wins rule
Bonus payouts are the second half of the trade. In the standard format, certain 21s pay more than even money, as long as you didn't double down on the hand. The usual schedule looks like this.

Many land-based versions add a large fixed prize for a suited 7-7-7 when the dealer's upcard is also a 7. Whether RTG includes it, and what it pays, isn't published in our sources, so check the paytable.
The 21-always-wins rule is the quiet workhorse. In regular blackjack, your 21 against the dealer's 21 is a push. Here you're paid. Combined with the multi-card bonuses, it encourages drawing to 21 with more cards than you would in a standard game.
Match Play 21 house edge and RTP, computed for standard rules
Removing the 10s hurts the player in a measurable way. Fewer 10-value cards mean fewer blackjacks, fewer strong double downs and more dealer hands that don't bust. You can see the first effect with plain arithmetic.
Chance of a blackjack on the first two cards (computed)
Shoe

Blackjack chance
Eight 52-card decks
128 of 416 (30.8%)
2 × 32/416 × 128/415 = 4.75%

2 × 32/384 × 96/383 = 4.18%
Six 52-card decks

2 × 24/312 × 96/311 = 4.75%
Six 48-card decks

2 × 24/288 × 72/287 = 4.18%
So a player sees a blackjack on about 1 hand in 24 instead of 1 in 21. The rule extras win back most of that loss. Computed for standard rules with perfect strategy, the house edge works out to roughly 0.4% when the dealer stands on soft 17 and about 0.8% when the dealer hits soft 17. That's an RTP of about 99.2% to 99.6%.
These are figures computed for standard rules, not RTG's published numbers. RTG's RTP for Match Play 21 isn't published in the sources available to us, so treat any single RTP you see quoted elsewhere with care and confirm the rules on screen.
The house edge is what the game keeps on average over a very large number of hands. Over a short session anything can happen, in either direction, and losses are the more likely result over time.
What online Match Play 21 costs per hour in dollars
Expected loss is total stake × house edge. An online table deals far faster than a casino pit, so the hourly figure depends on your pace. The table assumes 100 or 300 hands an hour, an illustration rather than a measured speed.

Two things raise the real cost above these numbers. First, strategy errors: playing Match Play 21 with ordinary blackjack habits gives back far more than the computed edge. Second, doubling more often puts more money on the table per hand, which raises your total stake even though each double is a good bet when made correctly.
A simple rule from our bankroll management guide: decide your session budget first, then pick a bet size that gives you at least 40 to 50 base bets. With a $100 budget, that means $2 to $2.50 a hand.
How to play Match Play 21 online, step by step
Open the game's help or rules screen and note the deck count, the soft 17 rule, the surrender rules and the bonus paytable.
Choose a chip size within your session budget and place your bet in the betting circle.
Check your two cards against the dealer's upcard. A blackjack pays 3:2 and, under standard rules, beats a dealer blackjack.
Decide to hit, stand, double, split or surrender. Remember that doubling on three or more cards is usually allowed.
Keep drawing toward 21 when a five-, six- or seven-card bonus is in reach and the strategy chart supports it.
Let the dealer finish the hand. Your 21 wins even if the dealer also makes 21.
Collect or lose the bet, then check your balance against the budget before the next hand.
If you're new to blackjack decisions in general, start with how to play blackjack and the meaning of a double down and a split before you try a variant.
Match Play 21 strategy: what changes from regular blackjack
Standard blackjack basic strategy is a starting point, not a finished chart. Because the 10s are gone, some doubles that are automatic in regular blackjack become weaker. Because of the bonuses and the 21-always-wins rule, some hands you'd normally stand on are worth another card.
Double less often on hard 9, 10 and 11 against strong dealer upcards, since fewer 10s arrive.
Hit more multi-card hands that are close to a bonus, such as a four-card 18 or 19 in some versions.
Use surrender, including surrender after doubling where offered, on the hands a variant-specific chart marks.
Never take insurance: the 48-card deck makes the dealer's blackjack even less likely than in a standard shoe.
Basic strategy reduces the house edge, but it doesn't remove it. No betting system changes that; the Martingale question shows how doubling bets after losses only makes swings larger. Card counting is of historical interest only here: online RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, as our card counting explainer sets out.
Match Play 21 vs blackjack, Super 21 and pontoon
RTG-powered lobbies often show several 21-style games side by side. Here's how they differ in the features that matter most to your money.
If you want the simplest, best-documented game, regular blackjack is easier to play well. If you enjoy chasing multi-card 21s and can learn a variant chart, Match Play 21's standard rules are among the better blackjack deals. For a broader look at the odds, see our answer on the house edge in blackjack.
Can you clear a casino bonus on Match Play 21?
Usually only partly, and sometimes not at all. Welcome offers at RTG casinos are built around slots. Table games are often excluded, weighted lower or given a much higher playthrough.
SlotoCash's own welcome-bonus terms limit eligible games to slots, Real-Series video slots (not progressives), keno and scratch cards, and say play on other games voids promotion winnings. Silver Oak's own pages set 60x wagering for blackjack, against 30x or 40x on slots (its offer page and terms conflict). Third-party reports on Planet 7 describe its welcome wagering as applying on slots. Our bonus game weighting guide explains how these rules work.
Here's the dollar effect. A $100 bonus with $100 deposit at 60x (deposit + bonus) needs $12,000 of blackjack wagering. At a 0.8% edge, the expected cost of that play is $96, which eats most of the bonus before any max cashout rule applies. See the best bonuses for blackjack players for offers that suit table play better.
Is online Match Play 21 legal in the US?
It depends on your state. Seven states license real-money online casinos: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Maine legalized tribal-run online casinos in January 2026, but nothing had launched by October 2026. Our list of states with legal online casinos has the detail.
RTG games appear mainly at offshore casinos, which no US state licenses or regulates. That means no state regulator to complain to and no state-backed protection for your balance. The federal UIGEA (opens in a new tab) targets payment processing for unlawful internet gambling rather than making a bet a federal crime for the player; state law decides the player's position. Read whether offshore casinos are legal before you deposit.
In Michigan, the Gaming Control Board has sent cease-and-desist letters to several RTG brands, including partners on this page. See online casinos in Michigan for what the board says.

Silver Oak names Primrose Media Limited as operator under an Anjouan license.
Planet 7's terms come from third-party reviews: LCB reports code WELCOME200 at 200% with 30x (bonus + deposit) on slots, a $1,000 max cashout and a $30 card minimum. Third parties disagree on its license. The Michigan Gaming Control Board named Silver Oak and Planet 7 in cease-and-desist letters on April 9, 2025 (opens in a new tab), calling them illegal offshore operators.
SlotoCash's own terms set 25x (deposit + bonus), a $20 minimum per bonus and no max cashout, but table games don't count toward its welcome bonus. Frequently asked questions
What is Match Play 21?
It's a blackjack variant that, in its standard form, uses 48-card decks with the four 10s removed. In exchange, the player gets extras: 21 always wins, a player blackjack beats a dealer blackjack, doubling is allowed on any number of cards and multi-card 21s pay bonuses. RealTime Gaming lists a version among its table games, but its exact rule card isn't published in our sources. Compare it with regular blackjack before you choose.
Is Match Play 21 the same as Spanish 21?
Closely related, though you should check the rules each time. The Match Play 21 name is widely used online for games built on the Spanish 21 format: a 48-card deck plus a set of player-friendly rules and bonus pays. Individual software makers can change the details, such as soft 17, surrender after doubling or the size of the bonus pays. RTG's help screen is the place to confirm its version. Our guide to RNGs explains how the cards are dealt.
What is the house edge on Match Play 21?
Computed for standard rules with perfect strategy, it's roughly 0.4% when the dealer stands on soft 17 and about 0.8% when the dealer hits soft 17. That's an RTP of around 99.2% to 99.6%. RTG's own figure for Match Play 21 isn't published in the sources available to us. Strategy mistakes raise the real cost, often by more than the edge itself. See house edge explained for the full method.
Why are the 10s removed in Match Play 21?
Removing the four 10-spot cards shifts the odds toward the house, which pays for the generous rules. With fewer 10-value cards, blackjacks fall from about 4.75% of hands to about 4.18%, doubles on 10 and 11 land fewer strong totals and the dealer busts less often. Jacks, queens and kings stay in the deck. The bonuses and the 21-always-wins rule then give most of that edge back. The glossary entry on the shoe covers deck counts.
Can I use basic strategy for Match Play 21?
Only as a rough guide, because the correct plays differ. Standard blackjack charts double too often on hard 9 to 11 for a 48-card deck and ignore the multi-card bonuses. A chart built for this variant tells you when to hit toward a five-card 21 and when to surrender. Using the wrong chart costs more than the game's edge. Start with blackjack basic strategy and then adjust for the variant's rules.
Can you count cards in online Match Play 21?
No, counting doesn't help in online RNG versions. A random number generator deals each hand from a freshly shuffled set of decks, so the cards seen in the last hand tell you nothing about the next one. Card counting is a land-based technique from multi-hand shoe games and is only of historical interest online. Our card counting explainer sets out why, and what does affect your results instead.
Which casinos have Match Play 21 online?
RealTime Gaming lists Match Play 21 among its table games, so RTG and SpinLogic casinos are the place to look, but none of our sources confirms it at a specific partner. Check the table games section of the lobby, and use demo mode if offered. Partner casinos are offshore and not licensed by any US state. Our best blackjack casinos list compares the partners for table play.
Do casino bonuses count on Match Play 21?
Often they don't, or they count at a much higher playthrough. SlotoCash's own welcome terms limit play to slots, keno and scratch cards. Silver Oak's own pages set 60x wagering on blackjack, double or more the slot rate. Many casinos also cap bets while a bonus is active. Check the eligible-games list before you opt in, because play on excluded games can void winnings. Our guide to game weighting shows how to read these rules.
Is online Match Play 21 rigged?
There's no published evidence that it is, but you can't verify an RTG table game's fairness yourself. Third-party sources say RTG games are tested by Technical Systems Testing, and offshore casinos aren't overseen by any US state regulator. The bigger practical risk is usually terms, caps and payouts rather than the cards. Read our answer on whether RTG games are fair and stick to a budget you can afford to lose.
Is online Match Play 21 legal in West Virginia?
Online blackjack is legal in West Virginia at state-licensed sites, since it's one of seven states that license real-money online casinos. The West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act authorized online casino games, with play authorized from fiscal year 2020, and state law (W. Va. Code §29-22E-6) caps the number of licenses at five. The West Virginia Lottery Commission regulates them, along with the state's five land casinos. Whether a licensed site offers a Spanish 21 style game is for you to check. Offshore RTG casinos hold no West Virginia license. See our West Virginia real money casinos page and state regulators list.
Does a five-card 21 pay extra in Match Play 21?
Yes, under the standard format, as long as you didn't double down on the hand. A five-card 21 usually pays 3:2, so $15 on a $10 bet; a six-card 21 pays 2:1 ($20), and seven or more cards pay 3:1 ($30). Special 21s made with 6-7-8 or 7-7-7 earn the same three tiers depending on whether the cards are mixed, suited or all spades. These bonuses are why the strategy sometimes says to hit a multi-card hand you'd stand on in regular blackjack. RTG's exact bonus schedule isn't published in our sources, so check the paytable. Compare the five-card trick in Pontoon and see casino math basics.
Can I surrender after doubling in Match Play 21?
In many versions of the standard format, yes. This rule lets you give up the original bet but keep the doubled portion when the third card is bad, and it changes which hands are worth doubling in the first place. Ordinary late surrender, giving up half your bet on the first two cards, is also usually allowed. RTG's rule card for Match Play 21 isn't published in our sources, so open the help screen and confirm both surrender options before relying on them. A variant chart tells you which hands to surrender. The surrender entry and our blackjack basic strategy guide explain the basic move.
Can I play Match Play 21 on my phone?
Probably, if a casino carries it, because the partners on this page run in mobile browsers; none of our sources confirms Match Play 21 in a specific lobby, though. Silver Oak's own mobile page covers browser play on iPhone, Android and tablets with no app, SlotoCash's support page says no software is needed, and Blockonomi reports browser play at Planet 7. Check the table games list on your phone and read the help screen there for the soft 17 and surrender rules. All three casinos are offshore and hold no US state license. Our best iPhone casinos list and mobile casino guide cover setup.
How much should I bet on Match Play 21?
Pick a bet that gives you at least 40 to 50 base bets from your session budget. With $100 to play with, that means $2 to $2.50 a hand. The game's average cost is low under standard rules: at $5 a hand and 100 hands an hour, the expected loss is about $2 with the dealer standing on soft 17 and about $4 if the dealer hits it, computed for standard rules. Doubling on any number of cards puts extra money on the table, so leave room for it. Strategy mistakes cost more than the edge. See our gambling budget guide and what is a good bankroll.
