Paytable meaning

Paytable meaning: a paytable is the screen inside a casino game that lists every winning combination and what it pays, along with the rules for wilds, scatters and features. On slots it explains how wins form; on video poker the pay table largely decides the game's return, so it's the first screen worth reading.

Key takeaways

  • The paytable lists every winning combination and its payout, usually as a multiple of your bet.
  • Check whether values are per line, per total bet or in coins before converting to dollars.
  • In video poker, small changes in the pay table change the return, which third-party data puts between about 97% and 99.5% for RTG titles.
  • The game's own paytable and help screen beat any outside source if they disagree.

Paytable meaning: what the screen shows

Every slot and video poker game has a paytable. On a slot, it shows each symbol with its prize for three, four or five in a row, plus pages that explain wilds, scatters, the bonus round and how paylines or ways to win are counted. Many games also state their RTP and maximum win there.

On a video poker machine, the pay table is usually printed above the cards and lists each hand, from a pair of jacks up to a royal flush, with its payout for one to five coins. It's part of our casino glossary, and it connects closely to the separate entry on the video poker pay table.

How to read a slot paytable in dollars

  1. Open the info, help or (i) menu in the game.
  2. Find the line that says how prizes are shown: per line bet, per total bet or in coins.
  3. Note whether the values update with your stake; many modern games show dollar amounts at your current bet.
  4. Read the special symbol pages: what substitutes, what pays anywhere and what starts features.
  5. Check the RTP and max-win lines, if the game shows them.
  6. Convert one or two prizes into dollars at the stake you plan to use, so you know what a typical win looks like.

The units trip people up. A prize of "50" might mean 50 times the line bet, 50 times the total bet or 50 coins, and the dollar values are very different. The example below uses made-up symbols and values purely to show the conversion.

Converting a hypothetical slot paytable into dollars
Symbol (hypothetical)5 of a kind paysAt $0.04 per line (25 lines, $1.00 spin)If the value were × total bet at $1.00
Gold crown500x$20.00$500.00
Lion100x$4.00$100.00
Ace20x$0.80$20.00
Ten5x$0.20$5.00

Same numbers, completely different money. If you misread the unit, you'll misjudge both the prizes and the risk. Our coin value entry explains coin-based displays.

Why the pay table decides video poker returns

In video poker, every game uses a standard deck, so the odds of each hand are known. The only lever the designer has is the pay table: trim the payout for a full house or a flush and the return drops. That's why players compare pay tables before anything else, and why the full pay label exists.

Those returns assume the best possible strategy for that exact pay table, which our video poker strategy guide explains. Third-party reviewer GamesHub's RTG page (opens in a new tab) is the source of several figures, and none comes from the studio itself. Look at the pay table in the game you're playing, because the version a casino runs is what counts.

In dollars: 500 hands at $1.00 stake $500. At a 99.54% return, the average cost is about $2.30; at 97%, it's $15. Play mistakes push the cost higher than either figure.

Paytable checks before you play

  • RTP shown in the game. Some RTG slots, such as 777 and Fortune Frog, are listed with an RTP range, so the figure in your casino's version is the one that counts.
  • Max win. The cap tells you the most the game can pay in one round; turn it into dollars at your stake.
  • Feature rules. Check how multipliers, retriggers and jackpots work, and whether a buy feature is offered.
  • Bet structure. Confirm lines × line bet, or one total stake, so you know your real cost per spin.
  • Conflicts. If a review says one thing and the paytable says another, go with the game's own screen.

None of this changes the house edge, but it stops surprises. Our how to play video poker guide walks through a hand from deal to payout.

Paytables, video poker and bonus terms

Video poker's high returns are exactly why casinos limit it in bonus play. SlotoCash's bonus terms (opens in a new tab) exclude video poker and table games by default, and Silver Oak's terms and conditions (opens in a new tab) set 60x wagering on table games and video poker against 40x on slots. Read the game weighting rules before choosing a game for bonus wagering.

Bonuses favor slots; table games and video poker are often excluded or weighted lower. Gambling costs money, and losses are likely over time. Free, confidential help is at 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).

Frequently asked questions

What does paytable mean in a slot game?

A paytable is the in-game screen that lists every winning symbol combination and what it pays, plus the rules for wilds, scatters and features. It's usually under an info, help or (i) button. Many games also show their RTP and max win there. See our how to play slots guide and RTP meaning.

Are paytable values per line or per total bet?

It depends on the game, and the paytable says which. Older line-based slots often show multiples of the line bet; many newer and ways-to-win games use multiples of the total bet; some show coins. Many modern games update the figures in dollars at your current stake. See paylines meaning and denomination meaning.

Why does the pay table matter so much in video poker?

Because the card odds are fixed, the pay table is what sets the return. Lowering one payout, such as for a full house, reduces the long-run return, so two Jacks or Better games can differ. Third-party data puts RTG video poker returns between about 97% and 99.5%, with best strategy. See full pay meaning and video poker strategy.

Where do I find a slot's paytable?

Open the game and look for an info, help, menu or (i) icon, usually near the spin button or in a corner. The paytable is often several pages long, covering symbols, special features and general rules. Read it before your first real-money spin. Our demo mode guide explains how to read paytables in practice play first, where casinos offer it.

Does the paytable show a slot's RTP?

Often, but not always. Many games state their return in the help or rules section. Some RTG slots are listed with an RTP range, so the figure in your casino's version may differ from catalog figures. If no RTP is shown, treat outside figures as unconfirmed. See payback meaning and how slot RTP works.

Can a paytable change during a bonus round?

Some features change what pays, for example by adding multipliers, upgrading symbols or adding extra lines, as in RTG's Copy Cat Fortune, which catalogs list at 25 paylines rising to 50 in free spins. The help screen explains any change. See multiplier meaning and our Copy Cat Fortune review.

How do I compare two video poker paytables?

Compare the payouts line by line for the same game, starting with the middle hands such as the full house and flush, because those are the lines designers trim first. Two games with the same name and identical card odds can return different amounts if one row pays less. Look at the one-coin column so the numbers are comparable, then check whether the game states its return. A shorter payout on any row means a lower long-run return. Our video poker pay table entry and how to play video poker guide explain what each row means.

Does a slot paytable show the maximum win?

Many slot paytables state a maximum win, usually as a multiple of your total bet, and it's worth converting into dollars before you play. GamesHub lists a 40,000x max win for RTG's Jackpot Piñatas Deluxe, which would be $20,000 at a $0.50 spin or $40,000 at $1. That's the ceiling for one round, not a likely result, and most spins pay far less or nothing. If the paytable gives no figure, treat third-party max-win numbers as unconfirmed. Read the Jackpot Piñatas Deluxe review and our jackpot odds guide.

Why do paytable prizes change when I change my bet?

Paytable prizes change because many modern slots show payouts in dollars at your current stake rather than as fixed multiples. Raise a $1.00 spin to $2.00 and every prize on the screen doubles, while the multiples behind them stay the same. Older games may show fixed coin values instead, which don't move when you change the bet. Neither display changes the return; the RTP is the same at every stake on most online slots. If the screen confuses you, read the units line first. Our low stakes guide and bet max meaning entry show how stakes affect prizes.

Does the paytable explain a slot's progressive jackpot?

Yes, a progressive slot's paytable or help screen normally explains how the jackpot is won, and it's the only place to confirm any qualifying bet. LCB reports that RTG's Megasaur pays 100% of the meter for five scatter volcanoes, 20% for four and 10% for three. Random-trigger jackpots work differently, so their paytable describes no winning symbol at all. Check whether the jackpot needs a minimum stake before you play. Our Megasaur slot review and progressive jackpot meaning entry go through the jackpot rules in more detail.

What should I do if a game's paytable differs from a casino review?

Go by the paytable inside the game you're playing, because that's the version the casino actually runs. Reviews and catalogs can be out of date, and some RTG slots are listed with an RTP range, so settings can differ between casinos. If a payout looks wrong, screenshot the paytable and the result, then contact support in writing quickly: SlotoCash's terms set a 14-day window for disputes and Silver Oak's terms set 3 days from the wager. Read how to file a casino complaint and our guide to how to read casino terms.

Why does Deuces Wild show different paytable returns?

Deuces Wild shows a range of returns because casinos can run versions with different pay tables, and each version has its own long-run figure. GamesHub gives RTG's Deuces Wild a 97% to 99% range, which means a house edge of about 1% to 3% with best play. On 500 hands at $1, that's an average cost of roughly $5 on the best version and $15 on the weakest. Compare the pay table in your casino's version before you settle in. See our Deuces Wild game page and what is Deuces Wild for the hand rankings.

Are paytables checked by a regulator in West Virginia?

In West Virginia, online casinos are legal and licensed through the West Virginia Lottery Commission, so licensed sites run games under state oversight. State law allows up to five interactive wagering licenses. Offshore casinos sit outside that system, and no US state checks the paytables or game versions they offer, so you rely on the casino's own screens and any testing lab it names. The partners on this page are offshore and hold no West Virginia license. Read our West Virginia online casino guide and the guide to offshore vs state-licensed casinos.
