Surrender meaning: in blackjack, surrender lets you fold your hand after the first two cards and take back half your bet. On a $20 hand you lose $10 instead of risking all $20. It only pays off on a handful of very weak hands, and not every game offers it, so check the rules first.
Surrender folds your hand and returns half the stake: a $20 bet costs exactly $10.
It makes sense only when your chance of winning the hand is below about one in four.
Typical spots are hard 16 against a dealer 9, 10 or ace, and hard 15 against a 10.
Late surrender comes after the dealer checks for blackjack; early surrender, rarer, comes before.

Surrender meaning: folding a blackjack hand for half
This casino glossary entry explains one of the least used options in blackjack. Surrender is a straight trade: you hand back your cards and the house keeps half your stake. You don’t play the hand, and the dealer’s result no longer matters to you.
It has to be your first decision. Once you hit, split or double down, surrender is no longer available. That is why it shows up only on the first two cards, and only when the game’s rules include it.

Late surrender protects the house against the worst case: when the dealer holds blackjack, the round ends before you can fold. Early surrender lets you escape even then, which is why so few tables offer it.
When surrender saves money: the one-in-four rule
Surrender always costs exactly 50% of your bet. Playing on costs less than that only if you win often enough. Ignoring pushes, a hand that wins with probability p has an average result of p − (1 − p) = 2p − 1 bets. That beats the −0.5 of surrender only when p is above 25%.

The percentages in the table are examples to show the arithmetic, not odds for a specific hand. Pushes and later options make real calculations more detailed, which is why charts built by simulation set the exact spots.
Which hands to surrender in blackjack
Standard multi-deck charts with late surrender list only a few hands. All involve a stiff total facing a strong dealer card:
Hard 16 (not a pair of 8s) against a dealer 9, 10 or ace.
Hard 15 against a dealer 10.
Some charts add hard 15 against an ace or 8-8 against an ace, depending on whether the dealer hits soft 17.
A pair of 8s is normally split, not surrendered. For the exact list for your rules, use the chart in our blackjack basic strategy guide; the basic strategy entry explains how it is built, and hard hand covers why 15 and 16 play so badly.
How to surrender online, step by step
Check the game’s help or rules screen to see whether surrender is offered at all.
Place your bet and look at your first two cards and the dealer’s upcard.
If the dealer shows an ace or 10 in a late-surrender game, wait for the blackjack check.
Choose surrender before any other action; the game returns half your stake.
Over-surrendering is the common error. Folding every 12 to 16 against a 10 turns many hands you would sometimes win into a certain loss of half. The hands above are the exceptions, not a general rule.
Surrender also doesn’t change the house edge on the game as a whole into a player advantage. It trims losses on bad hands, and the long-run result is still a loss. If surrendering feels like a way to “save” a losing session so you can keep playing, pause and read our page on chasing losses. Help is available at 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).

Frequently asked questions
What does surrender mean in blackjack?
Surrender means giving up your hand after the first two cards and getting half your bet back. You don’t play the hand out, and the house keeps the other half. It is useful only on a few very weak hands against strong dealer cards. Not every game offers it. See our blackjack entry for the other player options.
Is surrender a good idea in blackjack?
Surrender is a good idea only on specific hands, mainly hard 16 against a dealer 9, 10 or ace, and hard 15 against a 10. In those spots, playing on loses more than half your bet on average. Elsewhere it throws away hands you would win often enough to justify playing. Use the chart in our blackjack basic strategy guide.
What is the difference between late and early surrender?
Late surrender is offered only after the dealer checks for blackjack; early surrender is offered before. With late surrender, you lose your whole bet when the dealer has blackjack. With early surrender, you can still fold for half, which is much better for players and therefore rare. Check each game’s rules, and see house edge for why rules matter.
Can you surrender after hitting?
No, surrender is only available as your first decision on your original two cards. Once you take another card, split or double, the option disappears. That is why you need to decide quickly on hands like hard 16 against a 10. Our how to play blackjack guide sets out the order of decisions in each round.
Do online casinos offer surrender?
Some online blackjack games offer it and many don’t; it depends on the specific game. Third-party listings for RTG blackjack variants don’t state whether surrender is included, so open the help screen before you play. If the button never appears on a weak hand, the game doesn’t offer it. Our online blackjack page covers RTG’s main version.
How much do you lose when you surrender?
You lose exactly half your original bet. Surrender a $10 hand and $5 comes back; surrender a $50 hand and you lose $25. That fixed cost is why surrender only makes sense when your chance of winning the hand is below about 25%. Our casino math basics guide explains how to compare average results.
Should you surrender a pair of 8s in blackjack?
Usually not: a pair of 8s is normally split, not surrendered, because two hands that each start on 8 lose less on average than one hard 16. Some late-surrender charts make an exception for 8-8 against a dealer ace, depending on whether the dealer hits soft 17. On a $20 bet, surrendering costs a certain $10, while splitting puts $40 in play across two hands with a real chance to win. Check your game's rules and chart. Our split entry explains why 8s are among the always-split pairs.
Does surrender lower the house edge in blackjack?
Yes, correct use of surrender trims the house edge a little, because it cuts losses on the few hands where playing on costs more than half the bet. It never turns the game in your favor, and using it on the wrong hands raises your losses instead. RTG doesn't publish separate RTP figures for its blackjack variants with and without surrender, so the exact effect for each game isn't known. Compare full rule sets rather than one option. Our what is the house edge on blackjack answer covers the bigger factors.
What is the difference between surrender and insurance in blackjack?
Surrender ends your hand for a fixed loss of half your bet, while insurance is a separate side bet that the dealer has blackjack when showing an ace. Surrender is a decision about your own weak hand; insurance adds money to the round instead of reducing your exposure. With $20 bet, surrender returns $10 and finishes the round, while insurance asks for an extra stake on top of the $20. The two can both appear when the dealer shows an ace. Our insurance entry explains that side bet.
Can you surrender in RTG's Super 21?
It isn't published in the sources we checked, so open the game's help screen before you play. PokerListings lists RTG's Super 21 as a six-deck game with a 99.6% return, but third-party listings don't say whether surrender is included, or whether it's late or early. If the surrender button doesn't appear on your first two cards, assume the version you're playing doesn't offer it. Rule details can differ between casinos running the same title. Our Super 21 page lists what has been published about the game.
Does a surrendered hand count toward bonus wagering?
Casino terms we cover don't say how a surrendered hand counts, so ask support before relying on it. Blackjack is often excluded from bonuses or counts at a higher rollover: Silver Oak's offer page sets 60x for blackjack against 30x for slots, LCB reports 60x on blackjack at Royal Ace, and SlotoCash's welcome terms allow only slots, keno and scratch cards. Even where blackjack counts, surrendering returns half your stake, which may affect what's treated as wagered. Our what games count toward wagering answer explains weighting.
Why can't I surrender when the dealer shows an ace?
In a late-surrender game you can, but only after the dealer checks for blackjack, and if the dealer has it, the round ends before you get the chance. That's what separates late surrender from the rarer early surrender, which lets you fold for half even against a dealer blackjack. Online, the game pauses for the check and then offers the option if the dealer doesn't have 21. If no button appears at all, the variant doesn't include surrender. Our how to play blackjack guide shows the order of a round.
Should you surrender hard 15 against a dealer 10?
Yes, standard multi-deck charts with late surrender list hard 15 against a dealer 10 as a surrender hand. The reasoning is the one-in-four rule: surrender costs exactly half your bet, so it's better whenever your chance of winning the hand is below about 25%, and hard 15 against a 10 is one of the few spots charts place there. With $20 riding, surrendering costs a fixed $10. Some charts add hard 15 against an ace, depending on the dealer's soft 17 rule. Our hard hand entry explains why 15 plays so badly.
