What is shoe? In casino card games, a shoe is the box that holds several shuffled decks and lets the dealer slide out one card at a time. Blackjack and baccarat tables often use six- or eight-deck shoes. Online RNG games don’t use a physical shoe at all; software reshuffles the virtual cards for every hand.
A shoe is a dealing box holding several decks, used mainly for blackjack and baccarat.
A cut card near the back marks when the shoe will be reshuffled.
More decks make each card removed matter less, which blunts card counting.
Online RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, so there is no shoe to track.

What is a shoe? The casino dealing box
As our casino glossary defines it, a shoe is a container, usually open at the front, that holds a stack of shuffled cards. The dealer pushes out the top card with one finger, which keeps cards face down, stops anyone seeing the next card and speeds up dealing compared with a hand-held deck.
Shoes appeared because casinos moved from one- and two-deck games to games using many decks at once. Holding six decks in your hand isn’t practical, so the box does the work. In blackjack the shoe sits on the dealer’s left; in baccarat it is a central part of the ritual of the game.
How a blackjack shoe works, start to finish
The dealer shuffles all the decks together.
A player or the dealer places a colored cut card into the stack.
The cards go into the shoe, and the first card or few cards are burned (discarded unseen).
Cards are dealt from the shoe round after round, and used cards go into a discard tray.
When the cut card comes out, the dealer finishes the round and then reshuffles everything.
How deep the cut card sits is called penetration: the share of the shoe dealt before the reshuffle. Deeper penetration means more cards are seen before a fresh shuffle, which mattered historically to card counting.
Single deck vs shoe: why the number of decks matters
The share of each card type is the same whatever the deck count: one card in 13 is an ace. What changes is how much each card dealt shifts the odds of the next one.

In a single deck, one card makes a visible difference. In a six- or eight-deck shoe the effect is diluted, which is the main reason casinos use shoes. Rules matter too, so the deck count is only one input to the house edge of any game.
Blackjack shoe sizes at a glance: cards, aces and tens
Every standard deck has 52 cards, including 4 aces and 16 ten-value cards (tens, jacks, queens and kings). Multiply by the deck count and you get the make-up of any shoe. The proportions never change, which is why a blackjack is no more or less likely on the first hand of a fresh six-deck shoe than in a fresh single deck.

The 75% column is an example cut-card depth, not a published casino rule. Online RNG games skip all of this, because the virtual cards are reshuffled before each hand. To see how deck count fits with the rules that matter more, read our house edge explained guide and the what is the house edge on blackjack answer.
Is there a shoe in online blackjack?
Not in RNG games. A random number generator deals each hand from a freshly shuffled virtual deck or set of decks, so the cards from the last hand have no effect on the next. Game rules may still state a deck count: PokerListings lists RTG’s Super 21 as a six-deck game with 99.6% RTP, per its RTG software page (opens in a new tab).
Live dealer tables stream a real dealer and may use a real shoe. Third-party reviewers report no live dealer section at Silver Oak, Planet 7 or Royal Ace, so at these casinos blackjack is RNG-based; our live dealer entry and the question do RTG casinos have live dealer explain the difference.
Shoe myths: hot shoes and “due” cards
“The shoe is hot.” A run of player wins doesn’t make the next hand more likely to win. Each hand depends on the cards still to come, not on recent results.
“Ten-cards are due.” Without tracking every card dealt, you can’t know what’s left, and online there is nothing to track.
“A new player ruined the shoe.” Someone joining changes which cards you receive, not the long-run odds.
These ideas are versions of the gambler’s fallacy. Betting more because a shoe “feels” good is a quick way to overspend, so set limits in advance with our gambling budget guide. Free help: 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).

Frequently asked questions
What is a shoe in a casino?
A shoe is a dealing box that holds several shuffled decks so the dealer can slide out one card at a time. It is used mainly in blackjack and baccarat, where tables often play with six or eight decks. The shoe keeps cards hidden and makes dealing faster. Our how to play blackjack guide shows how a round is dealt.
How many decks are in a blackjack shoe?
Most shoes hold six or eight decks, though some games use four, and single- and double-deck games are dealt by hand without a shoe. The deck count is printed on the table or in the online game’s rules. PokerListings, for example, lists RTG’s Super 21 as a six-deck game. See our Super 21 page for the other published details.
What is the cut card in a shoe?
The cut card is a plastic card placed into the stack before it goes into the shoe. When the dealer reaches it, the current round is finished and then all the cards are reshuffled. Its position sets the penetration, meaning how much of the shoe is dealt. Our card counting entry explains why penetration mattered historically.
Do online casinos use a shoe?
RNG online games don’t use a physical shoe; software shuffles the virtual cards before every hand. That means past hands have no effect on future ones, and card tracking doesn’t work. Live dealer games may use a real shoe on camera, but reviewers report the RTG casinos above have no live dealer section. See how RNGs work for more.
Why do casinos use multiple decks in a shoe?
Casinos use several decks mainly because each card dealt then changes the odds of the next card much less. That makes counting harder and slows down the information a player can gather. A shoe also means fewer shuffles per hour. The deck count is one factor in the house edge, alongside the table rules.
Is a shoe game better than single deck?
Not automatically. Single-deck games can carry a lower house edge, but casinos often offset that with worse rules, such as a reduced payout for a natural blackjack. Compare the full rules and published RTP rather than the deck count alone. Our blackjack basic strategy guide shows how rule changes affect the right play.
What is a burn card in a blackjack shoe?
A burn card is a card the dealer removes from the top of a freshly loaded shoe and discards without showing it. Some tables burn one card and others burn a few, depending on house procedure. Burning protects the game in case anyone glimpsed the top card during the shuffle or cut. It doesn't change the odds for players, because nobody knows what was discarded. Online RNG blackjack has no burn card, since each hand comes from a fresh virtual shuffle. Our how to play blackjack guide walks through a full round.
What does shoe penetration mean in blackjack?
Shoe penetration is the share of the cards in a shoe that are dealt before the cut card comes out and the dealer reshuffles. As an example, 75% penetration in a six-deck shoe means 234 of its 312 cards are played. Deeper penetration means more cards are seen before a fresh shuffle, which is why it mattered to card counters in land-based casinos. In online RNG games there's no penetration at all, because every hand is reshuffled. See our blackjack card counting online guide.
Is baccarat dealt from a shoe?
Yes, land-based baccarat is dealt from a multi-deck shoe, and passing the shoe around the table is a traditional part of the game. Online RNG baccarat uses no physical shoe; the software reshuffles virtual cards for each hand. RTG offers a baccarat game, but third-party sources list no deck count or RTP for it, so check the game's help screen. Silver Oak's terms also exclude baccarat from bonus play. Our how to play baccarat guide covers the rules and bets.
Does SlotoCash have live dealer blackjack with a real shoe?
It's unclear, because third-party sources disagree. LCB says SlotoCash has live dealer games, while PokerListings says it has no dedicated live dealer section. If a live table exists, it may use a real shoe on camera; RNG blackjack does not. Check the casino lobby before depositing for live play. Reviewers report no live dealer section at Silver Oak, Planet 7 or Decode. Our SlotoCash table games page lists what's reported in its lobby.
Can I use bonus money on blackjack shoe games?
Sometimes, but bonuses usually make blackjack slow and expensive to clear. Silver Oak's offer page sets 60x on blackjack and video poker against 30x on slots, and LCB reports 60x on blackjack at Royal Ace. SlotoCash's own terms limit welcome bonus play to slots, keno and scratch cards, so blackjack hands don't count there at all. Always read the game list and weighting before playing table games with bonus funds. Our best bonus for blackjack page compares the terms.
How much does six-deck Super 21 cost per 100 hands?
At $10 a hand, 100 hands of RTG's six-deck Super 21 cost about $4 on average, based on the 99.6% return PokerListings lists. The math is 100 × $10 = $1,000 staked, multiplied by the 0.4% house edge. That figure assumes correct strategy for the game's rules; mistakes raise the cost, and single sessions swing well above or below it. Treat the RTP as third-party, and check the game's help screen. Our Super 21 page explains its special rules.
How many aces are in a six-deck blackjack shoe?
A six-deck shoe holds 24 aces among 312 cards, the same 1-in-13 share as a single deck. An eight-deck shoe has 32 aces among 416 cards. Because the share is identical, more decks don't make aces rarer at the start; they make each card dealt shift the odds of the next card less. After one ace is dealt from six decks, the chance of another drops only from 7.7% to 7.4%. Our card counting entry explains why that matters.
