What is cashback? At an online casino it is a partial refund, usually a percentage of your losses or of a deposit, credited back to your account, often with wagering attached. Below we show how it's calculated, what it is worth in dollars once rollover applies, and which partner casinos publish cashback terms.
Cashback returns a percentage of losses or deposits, not of winnings.
Wagering on the refund decides its real value: 1x is close to cash, 30x can wipe most of it out.
SlotoCash and Silver Oak publish cashback offers on their own sites; Miami Club lists a 25% Rebate Bonus.
Our partner casinos are offshore and not licensed by any US state, so check your state's law first.

What is cashback in online casinos?
Cashback is money a casino gives back after you lose. The casino takes a period (a day, a week or a month), works out what you lost or deposited, and returns a fixed percentage as a credit. It works like a partial rebate on play, which is why some sites call it a rebate or a loss refund.
Look at what the credit actually is. Some casinos pay cashback as withdrawable cash. Many pay it as a bonus balance that has to be wagered before it can be cashed out. That one detail, more than the headline percentage, decides whether a cashback deal is worth much.
Cashback is also different from a deposit match bonus. A match adds money before you play. Cashback arrives after losses, so it softens a bad session rather than funding a new one. Our glossary entry on cashback has the short definition.
How casino cashback is calculated
Most offers use one of two bases. Loss-based cashback uses net losses: deposits minus withdrawals minus the balance left at the end of the period. Deposit-based cashback applies the percentage to a qualifying deposit, often only if that deposit was played without a bonus.
The arithmetic is simple. Cashback = qualifying amount × cashback rate. What changes the outcome is the qualifying amount, because terms may exclude bonus play, certain games or losses below a minimum.

Notice the last row. Loss-based cashback pays nothing in a winning period, so it never adds to a win. It only reduces the size of a loss.
Types of cashback: instant, weekly, monthly and VIP
Casinos package cashback in several ways. The labels vary from site to site, so read each promotion's own terms rather than relying on the name.

VIP cashback is usually tied to a loyalty or VIP program, sometimes alongside comp points. Higher tiers often mean a higher rate, but they also usually mean more money staked to get there.
Does cashback have wagering requirements?
Often, yes. A wagering requirement is the amount you must bet before the credit becomes withdrawable. On cashback, it is normally a multiple of the cashback amount itself.
Silver Oak's own cash-back page, for example, states a 30x requirement. On a $100 cashback credit, that means $3,000 in bets before cashing out. SlotoCash's promotions page summary doesn't state a rollover for its instant cashback, so check the terms shown when you claim it.
What cashback is really worth in dollars
Every bet you place to clear wagering carries the house edge. The expected cost of clearing is total wagering × house edge. Compare that with the credit and you get a rough value.
Take a $50 cashback credit on a slot with a 96% RTP, so a 4% house edge:
At 1x wagering: $50 of bets, expected cost $2, so the credit is worth about $48 on average.
At 10x wagering: $500 of bets, expected cost $20, worth about $30 on average.
At 30x wagering: $1,500 of bets, expected cost $60. That's more than the $50 credit, so in a typical run the credit is used up before wagering is finished.
These are averages, and single sessions swing both ways. Still, the pattern holds: low or no wagering makes cashback close to cash, while high wagering turns it into extra playing time with little expected cashout. Our guide to the expected value of a bonus walks through the same method for other offers.

Cashback vs a match bonus: which is better value?
Neither is better in every case. A match gives more money up front with heavy rollover. Cashback gives less, but only when you've lost, and sometimes with lighter rollover.

Cashback terms to check before you claim
Wagering on the refund. Anything above about 10x sharply cuts the value, as shown above.
Credit type. Cash, bonus funds or comp points each behave differently at withdrawal.
Claim window. SlotoCash's instant cashback must be claimed within 48 hours, per its promotions page.
Excluded games. Bonus terms at several partners exclude or limit table games, live dealer and progressives.
Pending withdrawals. SlotoCash's general bonus terms say you can't take bonuses while a withdrawal is pending.
Never chase losses to qualify for a bigger refund. A 25% refund on a $400 loss still leaves you $300 down.
How to claim casino cashback, step by step
Read the cashback promotion's terms: rate, basis (losses or deposit), wagering, claim window and excluded games.
Check whether a bonus on the same deposit disqualifies it.
Play only games the terms allow, and keep your own record of deposits and withdrawals.
Claim through the cashier or live chat inside the stated window, or wait for automatic crediting if the terms say so.
Confirm whether the credit arrived as cash or bonus funds, and note the wagering left to clear.
Complete account verification early so a later withdrawal isn't held up.
Is casino cashback legal for US players, and is it taxed?
Cashback is a promotion, so its legality follows the casino's. Real-money online casinos are state-licensed only in a handful of states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Our partners are offshore and are not licensed by any US state. Your own state's law decides whether playing at them is allowed, so read our page on offshore casino legality.
On taxes, gambling winnings are taxable federal income. For tax years from 2026, the loss deduction is reported to be capped at 90% of losses and only up to your wagering gains; check IRS guidance. See our gambling taxes guide and the IRS W-2G instructions (opens in a new tab) for reporting thresholds.
Keeping cashback in perspective
Cashback is a discount on losing, not a way to come out ahead. The house edge still applies to every bet, so over time losses are likely. Treat any refund as a small cushion on money you'd already budgeted for entertainment.
The partners below publish cashback or rebate promotions. They are offshore casinos, not licensed or regulated by any US state, so there's no state regulator to complain to and your balance has no state-backed protection. Check your state's law before signing up. All offers are for new players aged 21+ (18+ where allowed), and terms apply.
SlotoCash: $6,000 Welcome Bonus + 60 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). The casino's own welcome terms say 25x (deposit + bonus), a $20 minimum deposit per bonus and no max cashout (primary), and its site advertises a different package, so the terms shown at sign-up apply.
Silver Oak: $2,500 Welcome Bonus + 50 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Its own new-member page states 30x playthrough while its general terms say 40x on slots, with no max withdrawal stated and a $30 minimum deposit (primary); that conflict is unresolved, so check the terms at sign-up.
Miami Club: $4,000 Bonus + 285 Bonus Games, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Its published package is up to $800 over eight deposits at 20x deposit plus bonus, with no cap stated on deposit bonuses (primary). Miami Club runs WGS (Wager Gaming) software, not RTG.
On eligibility: section 1.6 of Miami Club's Terms of Use (opens in a new tab) (v2.1, September 28, 2026) lists the United States as a prohibited jurisdiction, while the site owner's affiliate program confirms US players are accepted. Confirm your eligibility at sign-up before you deposit.
Michigan's Gaming Control Board has issued cease-and-desist letters calling these brands illegal offshore operators: Silver Oak on April 9, 2025, Miami Club on August 14, 2025, and SlotoCash on October 8, 2026. We don't show offers to Michigan readers.

Frequently asked questions
What is cashback in a casino, in simple terms?
Cashback is a partial refund of what you lose at a casino. The casino takes a set period, works out your net losses or a qualifying deposit, and credits a percentage back. It may arrive as cash or as bonus funds that carry wagering. Because it only pays after losses, it softens a losing run rather than adding to wins. Our cashback bonus guide covers the formats in more depth.
Is cashback from an online casino paid as real money?
Sometimes, but often it's bonus money first. If the terms pay cashback as cash with no wagering, you can withdraw it like any balance. If it comes as bonus funds, you must meet the wagering requirement before cashing out, and the house edge eats into it as you play. Silver Oak's own page states 30x on its cash back. Read what wagering requirements mean before you claim.
How is a cashback percentage calculated?
Multiply the qualifying amount by the rate. With loss-based cashback, the qualifying amount is net losses: deposits minus withdrawals minus your remaining balance. A $400 net loss at 10% returns $40. With deposit-based cashback, the rate applies to a qualifying deposit, sometimes only one played without a bonus. Terms may exclude certain games or bonus play from the calculation, so check them. The house edge explains why losses happen in the first place.
Which casinos offer cashback to US players?
Among our partners, SlotoCash and Silver Oak publish cashback offers on their own sites, and Miami Club lists a 25% Rebate Bonus. Third-party reviews also report 25% cashback at 20x at Decode. All are offshore casinos that no US state licenses, so check your state's law. Miami Club's Terms of Use (section 1.6) list the US as prohibited, though its affiliate program accepts US players; confirm eligibility at sign-up. Our ranked list of the best cashback casinos compares them on terms, and you should confirm live terms before depositing.
Is cashback better than a no deposit bonus?
They solve different problems. A no deposit bonus lets you try a casino without depositing, but it usually carries high wagering and a low max cashout. Cashback needs you to deposit and lose first, then returns part of that loss. If the cashback has low wagering, it can be worth more in expected dollars. Compare both with the method in our expected value of a bonus guide.
Do VIP players get more cashback?
Usually, yes. SlotoCash's VIP page lists monthly cashback on net losses of 5% at Gold, 10% at Platinum and 15% at Diamond, with entry by invitation. Silver Oak's VIP page lists monthly cashback from 4% to 35% depending on tier. Higher tiers generally require much more play, though, so don't stake more to climb a ladder. The SlotoCash VIP program page breaks down its tiers.
Is cashback taxable in the US?
Gambling winnings are taxable federal income, and anything you win and withdraw belongs in your records. The IRS materials we cite don't single out cashback credits, so ask a tax professional how to treat them. From the 2026 tax year, the loss deduction is reported to be limited to 90% of losses and only up to your gains; check IRS guidance. Our gambling loss deduction page explains the change.
Can cashback help me win back my losses?
No. Cashback returns only a fraction of what you've already lost, and if it carries wagering, the house edge keeps working while you clear it. Depositing more to qualify for a bigger refund simply increases the amount at risk. Treat cashback as a small discount on entertainment spending. If losses are causing stress, call 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) or see our responsible gambling hub for free, confidential help.
Where can I find more casino bonus questions answered?
Our casino questions hub collects straight answers on bonuses, banking, law and games. Related topics include what a match bonus is, how max cashout rules work and how tournaments pay prizes. Each answer explains the terms in dollars and sets out the US legal position, so you can judge an offer before you deposit anywhere.
How long does it take to get cashback at an online casino?
It depends on the promotion, because each cashback offer sets its own timing. SlotoCash's promotions page says its instant cashback must be claimed within 48 hours of the qualifying deposit, so a late request can lose the refund. Silver Oak's cash-back page says its credit lands on Mondays at 00:01 EST for the prior week's qualifying deposits. Monthly VIP cashback usually follows the month's close. Note the window before you deposit, and see the SlotoCash review or our cashback bonus guide for how each format is credited.
How much do I need to deposit to get Silver Oak's cashback?
Silver Oak's cash-back page sets the bar high: the deposit must exceed $1,000 and be played without a bonus. The rate then rises with the deposit band, at 30% for $1,001 to $5,000, 40% for $5,001 to $10,000 and 50% above $10,001, with 30x wagering on the credit. A $2,000 no-bonus deposit lost in full would return $600, which then needs $18,000 in bets to clear. That suits very few budgets. The Silver Oak review covers its other promotions and banking limits.
Does casino cashback count losses on table games and live dealer?
Not always, so check the cashback terms for game exclusions before you play. Bonus terms at several of our partners exclude or limit table games, live dealer and progressive jackpots, and cashback paid as bonus funds usually follows the same game rules when you wager it. Some promotions also count only losses on eligible games toward the refund itself. If you mainly play blackjack or video poker, ask support in writing which games qualify. Our wagering requirements explainer shows how game weighting changes the cost of clearing a credit.
Is a 25% cashback offer worth it once wagering applies?
A 25% cashback offer can be worth a lot or very little, depending on the rollover. Say you lose a $200 deposit and get $50 back. With no wagering, that's $50 you can withdraw. With the 20x requirement third-party reviews report on Decode's 25% cashback, you'd bet $1,000 to clear it, and at a 4% slot house edge the expected cost is $40, leaving about $10 on average. Run the same sum on any offer with our expected value of a bonus guide, and see the Decode review for its terms.
Can I claim casino cashback while a withdrawal is pending?
At SlotoCash, no: its general bonus terms say you can't take bonuses while a withdrawal is pending, and cashback paid as a bonus falls under the same rule. Other casinos may set similar conditions, so read the general bonus terms as well as the cashback promotion itself. If you want the refund, decide before you request a cashout, or cancel the pending request only if you're comfortable putting that money back at risk. Our SlotoCash withdrawals page explains its processing rules and limits.
