Progressive jackpots explained simply: a slice of every qualifying bet feeds a prize that keeps growing until someone wins it, then resets to a starting amount. The pool can sit inside one game, one casino or a network of casinos, and on RealTime Gaming slots it may be won by landing symbols or at random on any spin.
A progressive jackpot grows from players' stakes, so part of every bet funds a prize that rarely lands.
RTG runs local random jackpots and pooled jackpots shared across casinos, according to third-party sources.
Jackpot slots often have a lower base-game return, and most sessions never touch the jackpot.
Offshore weekly or monthly withdrawal caps can turn a big win into months of payments, unless the terms make an exception.
Many welcome bonuses exclude progressive jackpot slots, and winnings of $2,000 or more trigger a W-2G under 2026 IRS rules.

What a progressive jackpot is
A fixed jackpot pays the same amount every time, such as 1,000 times your bet. A progressive jackpot is different: its value rises as people play, because a small portion of each qualifying wager is added to the prize meter. When someone wins, the meter drops back to a starting amount and begins climbing again.
That growth is paid for by the players. The money in the meter didn't come from the casino's pocket; it came out of the return the game would otherwise pay on ordinary spins. That's the key trade-off to understand before you choose a jackpot game over a regular slot. This guide, part of our casino guides, walks through the types, the math and the fine print.
Wikipedia describes Real Series jackpots as random prizes that can be won whatever symbols land, local to one casino or a group run by the same operator. A pooled jackpot is shared across casinos, so it grows faster and reaches larger figures.
How progressive jackpots are won
There are three common triggers, and the paytable tells you which one a game uses.
Symbol combination: a specific line of symbols pays the jackpot. LCB's description of Megasaur (opens in a new tab) says five volcano symbols pay 100% of its progressive, four pay 20% and three pay 10%.
Random trigger: the jackpot can land on any spin regardless of the reels. PokerListings says Aladdin's Wishes has a randomly triggered progressive that can be won without maximum bets.
Feature trigger: a bonus round or Hold and Win feature awards one of several jackpot tiers. Khrysos Gold, for example, is listed with a Hold and Win feature containing three jackpots including a progressive Grand.
Some jackpot games require a minimum or maximum bet to qualify; others don't. Read the jackpot rules on the game's help screen, because a spin below the qualifying stake can't win the top prize on games that set one.
How big do RTG progressive jackpots get?
GamesHub says RTG is known for networked progressives that often exceed $1 million, and cites a top Aztec's Millions jackpot of more than $1.7 million. Those are reported historical figures, not current meter values, and local Real Series jackpots are typically much smaller because they draw from a smaller pool.
A large meter doesn't mean a win is close. Jackpot odds are fixed by the game's design, so a meter that hasn't paid for months is no more likely to pay on your next spin. Our answer on how often jackpots hit explains why no honest source can give you a timing pattern.
Progressive jackpots and RTP: the trade-off
Because part of each stake feeds the meter, jackpot slots often return less on ordinary spins than comparable non-jackpot games. How much of the total RTP comes from the jackpot isn't published for RTG titles in the sources we used. Third-party listings give these figures for games tagged with a progressive jackpot:
RTG games with progressive jackpots (third-party listings)
Worked example: wager $500 on a 94% jackpot slot and the expected loss is $30. The same $500 on a 97.5% game costs $12.50 on average. Unless the jackpot lands, which is unlikely in any one session, you're paying about $17.50 more for the chance. That's a fair entertainment choice only if you go in knowing the price.
How to check a jackpot game before you play
Open the game's help screen and find the jackpot rules: trigger type, qualifying bet and whether the prize is shared across casinos.
Note the RTP if it's shown, and compare it with a non-jackpot slot you might play instead.
Read the casino's withdrawal limits and look for any jackpot exception to weekly or monthly caps.
If you're using a bonus, check whether progressive jackpot slots are excluded; playing them can void bonus winnings.
Set a budget for the session and keep the stake you'd use on any other slot. Don't raise bets because the meter is high.
If you do win, screenshot the result and keep the casino's messages; offshore disputes are settled by the casino's own terms.
Why bonuses often exclude progressive jackpot slots
Casinos usually bar jackpot games from bonus play, so a jackpot hit isn't funded by promotional money. SlotoCash's published bonus terms (opens in a new tab) allow slots and Real-Series video slots but exclude progressive jackpot slots, and list progressive jackpot games among those excluded by default. Silver Oak's terms also exclude progressives from bonus play.
Breaking that rule can cost you the bonus and anything won with it. If you want to play jackpot games, the simplest route is often to play them with your own deposit and no active bonus. Our bonus game weighting and bonus terms red flags pages explain the rules to look for.
Getting paid: withdrawal caps on a big jackpot
At an offshore casino, a large win may be paid in installments. SlotoCash's banking page lists a $5,000 weekly and $20,000 monthly withdrawal limit, adjustable by VIP status. Third-party reviews report $2,500 a week and $5,000 a month at Royal Ace and Slot Madness. Unless the terms make an exception for jackpots, the caps decide the timeline.
How long a $100,000 win takes to withdraw under published or reported caps
Jackpot winnings are taxable federal income. For payments made in 2026, slot wins of $2,000 or more trigger a Form W-2G from the payer, according to the IRS instructions (opens in a new tab). Regular gambling withholding doesn't apply to slots, but 24% backup withholding can apply if you don't give a correct taxpayer ID. You owe the tax whether or not a form arrives; our gambling taxes guide explains reporting and the reported 90% loss-deduction cap from tax year 2026 (check IRS guidance).
Progressive jackpot slots and US law
In New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island, state-licensed casinos offer jackpot slots under a regulator's oversight, which gives winners a state agency to go to if payment stalls. Elsewhere, the jackpot games on offer are at offshore casinos that no state licenses. Michigan's Gaming Control Board has named SlotoCash in an October 8, 2026 cease-and-desist release (opens in a new tab) and Slot Madness in an August 14, 2025 action. See offshore casinos legality and your state on our states hub.
A big meter can pull players into longer sessions. If that's happening, the National Problem Gambling Helpline is free at 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), 24/7.

Frequently asked questions
How does a progressive jackpot meter grow and reset?
A progressive jackpot meter grows by taking a small share of each qualifying bet and adds it to a prize meter that keeps rising until someone wins, then resets to a starting amount. The pool may cover one game, one casino or many casinos. It's won by a symbol combination, a feature or a random trigger, depending on the game. Our what is a progressive jackpot answer gives the short version.
Are progressive jackpot slots like Aztec's Millions worth playing?
They can be worth it as entertainment if you accept that the jackpot is unlikely and that the base game often returns less. Compare RTPs: $500 wagered at 94% costs $30 on average versus $12.50 at 97.5%. If the jackpot is the point, play with money you've set aside for fun. Our best progressive jackpot casinos list explains how we compare sites.
Is a jackpot more likely to hit when it's big?
No, a large meter doesn't make a win more likely on the next spin. The odds are fixed by the game's design, and each spin is independent. Some players believe a 'ripe' jackpot is due, which can lead to bigger stakes and longer sessions. See how RNGs work for why past spins don't affect future ones.
Do you have to bet max to win the Aladdin's Wishes progressive?
No, PokerListings says RTG's Aladdin's Wishes has a random progressive that can be won without maximum bets. Other games differ: some jackpots require a qualifying bet, while others can be won at any stake. Check the jackpot rules in the game's help screen before you play. Our bet max glossary entry explains the term.
What is an RTG Real Series jackpot?
Real Series jackpots are random progressive prizes attached to some RTG slots, which Wikipedia says can be won whatever symbols land and are local to one casino or a group run by the same operator. They're usually smaller than pooled network prizes because the pool is smaller. Read our Real Series jackpot entry and the RTG software page.
Can I use a SlotoCash bonus on progressive jackpot slots?
No, SlotoCash's own terms exclude progressive jackpot slots from its welcome bonus, and breaking that rule can void winnings. Many casinos do the same, and Silver Oak's terms exclude progressives too. If you want jackpot play, consider using your own deposit without an active bonus. Our what games count toward wagering answer explains weighting.
How would SlotoCash pay a $100,000 jackpot win?
In installments, unless its terms make an exception: SlotoCash lists a $20,000 monthly withdrawal limit, so a $100,000 win would take five months. By comparison, reviewers report $5,000 a month at Royal Ace and Slot Madness, which would take 20 months. Check jackpot exceptions first. Our withdrawal limits page covers caps in detail.
Are jackpot winnings taxed in the US?
Yes, jackpot winnings are taxable federal income, wherever you win them. For 2026 payments, slot wins of $2,000 or more trigger a W-2G from the payer under IRS rules, and backup withholding can apply without a correct taxpayer ID. You must report winnings even if no form is issued. See do I pay tax on casino winnings for more.
How big has the Aztec's Millions progressive jackpot been?
GamesHub cites a top Aztec's Millions jackpot of more than $1.7 million, and says RTG is known for networked progressives that often exceed $1 million. Those are reported historical figures, not live meter values, and we couldn't confirm them on RTG's own site. Aztec's Millions is a pooled progressive, drawing on bets across many casinos, which is why it can climb so high; local Real Series prizes draw on one casino or operator and stay smaller. The trade-off is a 94% listed RTP with high volatility. See our Aztec's Millions review and the answer on what is Aztec's Millions.
How does the Megasaur progressive jackpot work?
Megasaur pays its progressive on volcano symbols: LCB's description says five volcanoes pay 100% of the jackpot, four pay 20% and three pay 10%. That makes it a symbol-combination progressive rather than a random one, so the reels decide the prize. Whether a qualifying bet applies isn't stated in our sources, so check the help screen before playing. VegasSlotsOnline lists Megasaur as medium volatility, but no usable RTP figure is published, which makes its cost per spin hard to compare with other slots. Read our Megasaur review and what is Megasaur for the details.
Which RTG progressive jackpot slot has the highest RTP?
In third-party listings, Coyote Cash is the highest at 97.5%, followed by Caesar's Empire at 97% (GamesHub gives 96.5%–97.49%) and Jackpot Piñatas Deluxe at up to 96.5%. Aztec's Millions is lower at 94%. If you count video poker, Double Double Jackpot Poker is listed at 98.98%. The difference shows in dollars: $1,000 wagered at 97.5% has an expected cost of $25, against $60 at 94%. A casino can run a different setting from the catalog figure, so check the game's help screen. See our Coyote Cash review and how slot RTP works.
What happens if I win a progressive jackpot at Slot Madness?
The win goes to your balance, but getting it out is slow: third-party reviews report Slot Madness caps withdrawals at $2,500 a week and $5,000 a month, so a $50,000 jackpot would take ten months unless the terms make an exception. Identity checks come first, with documents sent to documents@slotmadness.com and verification reported at 0–3 days. Screenshot the win and keep every message, because disputes are settled under the casino's own terms. Slot Madness is offshore, and Michigan named it on August 14, 2025. Federal tax applies too. See Slot Madness withdrawals and what to do after a big win.
What is the difference between a progressive and a fixed jackpot slot?
A fixed jackpot pays a set amount written in the paytable, while a progressive jackpot grows with each qualifying bet until someone wins it and then resets. Among RTG games, Primal Warriors: Legacy and Jackpot Saloon are listed with fixed jackpots through Hold and Win or bonus features. Progressives include pooled games such as Aztec's Millions and in-game tiers like Epic Holiday Party's Mini, Minor, Major and Grand. Fixed jackpots don't take a slice of each stake for a meter, so more of the RTP can go to ordinary wins. Compare Jackpot Saloon with our jackpot odds guide.
