Two different things share the name. The button is a game control. The “max bet rule” is a bonus term that limits how much you may stake per spin while bonus funds are active. Confusing the two is a common way to lose bonus winnings.
Pressing bet max changes nothing about the odds; the random number generator treats every spin independently. What changes is the stake, and with it the expected cost, which is total dollars staked multiplied by the house edge. Do you need to bet max to win a jackpot?
Not always, and the answer depends on the game. PokerListings’ RTG overview (opens in a new tab) says the random progressive on Aladdin’s Wishes can be won without maximum bets. RTG’s Real Series random jackpots are described as triggering at random, regardless of the symbols on the reels. Other progressives may tie eligibility or the size of the award to your stake.

Bet max in video poker
Video poker is where max coins can matter for the pay table. Some tables pay a bigger royal flush award only at the maximum coin count, which is why players often bet five coins. If that is the case on your game, consider a lower denomination at max coins rather than a higher denomination at fewer coins: a 5¢ game at five coins costs $0.25 a hand, a $1 game at five coins costs $5.00.
Compare the video poker pay table before you play. Third-party catalogs list RTG’s Jacks or Better at 99.54% with optimal play, but that figure assumes perfect strategy, and it doesn’t make any session a winning one.
