Come bet meaning in craps

Come bet meaning: a come bet is a craps wager made after the shooter's point is set that works just like a new pass line bet, with the next roll acting as its own come-out roll. It wins on 7 or 11, loses on 2, 3 or 12, and otherwise moves to that number as its own point.

Key takeaways

  • A come bet is a pass line bet you make in the middle of a round.
  • The next roll is its come-out: 7 or 11 wins, 2, 3 or 12 loses.
  • Any other total becomes the come bet's own point, separate from the shooter's.
  • It pays even money with the same 1.41% house edge as the pass line.
  • Several come bets at once raise the amount at risk, not your odds.

Come bet meaning: a pass line bet mid-round

As our craps and casino glossary puts it, the come bet exists because the pass line can only be joined before a come-out roll. Once the shooter has a point, the area marked COME lets you start a fresh bet with exactly the same rules, using whatever roll comes next as its starting point.

The bet is personal to you. The shooter's point carries on as before, and your come bet gets its own point if one is needed. That's why players say a come bet "travels": once a number is rolled, the chip is moved from the come area to that number's box on the layout.

How a come bet wins, loses or moves

What the next roll does to a new come bet
Next rollWays out of 36Come bet result
7 or 118Wins even money right away
2, 3 or 124Loses right away
4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 1024Moves to that number; it's now the come point

Once it has moved, the come bet wins if its number rolls again before a 7 and loses if a 7 comes first. The shooter's point doesn't matter to it. A 7 that ends the shooter's round also loses every come bet that has already moved to a number, which is the main risk in running several at once.

A come bet example with three bets working

Here's how a sequence might play out with $10 on the pass line and $10 come bets. The shooter's come-out roll is 6, so 6 is the point.

  1. You place a $10 come bet. The next roll is 9, so your come bet moves to the 9.
  2. You place another $10 come bet. The next roll is 11: this new come bet wins $10 at once, and the bets on 6 and 9 stay in play.
  3. You place a third $10 come bet. The next roll is 5, so it moves to the 5. You now have $30 at risk on 6, 9 and 5.
  4. The next roll is 9: that come bet wins $10 and is paid off.
  5. The next roll is 7: the shooter sevens out. Your pass line bet on 6 and your come bet on 5 both lose, $20 in total.

Net result: +$10 (the 11) + $10 (the 9) − $20 (the 7) = $0 after five rolls. A single 7 settled two bets against you at once, which is how strings of come bets can swing a balance quickly.

Come bet odds and house edge

Because the rules mirror the pass line, a come bet wins 244 times in 495 on average, about 49.29%, and carries the same house edge of about 1.41%. On $10 that's an average cost of about $0.14 per bet settled.

Average cost of come bets by amount wagered
Come bets settledStake eachTotal wageredAverage cost at 1.41%
20$5$100About $1.41
50$10$500About $7.07
100$25$2,500About $35.35

Running more come bets doesn't change the edge on any of them; it just puts more money through the game per roll, so the average cost per hour goes up. You can add an odds bet behind a come bet once it has moved to a number, and that extra money carries no house edge.

Don't come bets: the reverse side

The don't come bet mirrors the don't pass. On its first roll it wins on 2 or 3, loses on 7 or 11 and pushes on 12. If a number is rolled, it moves there and wins if a 7 arrives before that number repeats. Its edge is about 1.36%.

Choosing between come and don't come is mostly a matter of taste, since the costs are almost the same. Our how to play craps guide explains each area of the layout, and the craps game page covers the online version.

Come bets in RTG online craps

RealTime Gaming includes Craps in its table game range, per GamblingNews' RTG overview (opens in a new tab), but the game's RTP, limits and odds rules aren't published in third-party listings. Standard dice math applies if the game follows normal rules; check the help screen to confirm how it handles come bets and odds.

In an online game, rolls come faster than at a live table, so come bets settle more often per hour. Decide a budget in advance and keep stakes small enough to last. Our bankroll management guide helps, and 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) is the free National Problem Gambling Helpline.

Frequently asked questions

What is a come bet in craps?

A come bet is a craps wager made after a point is set that follows the same rules as a pass line bet. The next roll is its own come-out: 7 or 11 wins, 2, 3 or 12 loses, and any other number becomes its point. It then wins if that number repeats before a 7. Our craps pass line entry explains the matching bet.

When can you make a come bet?

You can make a come bet on any roll after the shooter has established a point. Before the come-out roll, the equivalent bet is the pass line, and the come area isn't in use. You can keep placing come bets on later rolls, each getting its own point. See our how to play craps guide for the order of play.

What happens to come bets when a 7 is rolled?

A 7 has two effects on come bets. A brand-new come bet wins on a 7, because that's its come-out roll. But every come bet that has already moved to a number loses on that same 7. That's why a seven-out can settle several bets against you at once. Read the worked example above, and our house edge entry for the costs.

Is a come bet better than a place bet?

A come bet is usually cheaper than a place bet on most numbers, because the come bet's edge is about 1.41%, while standard place bets on 4, 5, 9 and 10 cost more. Place bets on 6 and 8 are closer. The trade-off is control: you choose a place bet's number, but a come bet's number is decided by the dice. Our craps game page lists the main bets.

Can you add odds to a come bet?

Yes, under standard rules you can add an odds bet behind a come bet once it has moved to a number. The odds bet pays at true odds, so it carries no house edge and lowers the combined cost of your bet. How much odds an online game allows isn't published for RTG's version. Our odds bet entry shows the payouts.

Do multiple come bets improve your chances?

No, multiple come bets don't improve your chances; each one carries the same 1.41% edge. Running several just puts more money at risk on each roll and raises your average cost per hour. A single 7 can then settle several bets against you together. Set a session budget first, using our bankroll management guide.

How much does a come bet pay in craps?

A come bet pays even money, so a $10 come bet that wins returns $10 profit plus your stake. That applies whether it wins straight away on a 7 or 11 or later when its number repeats before a 7. Any odds bet you add behind it pays at true odds instead: 2 to 1 on 4 or 10, 3 to 2 on 5 or 9 and 6 to 5 on 6 or 8. So $10 of odds on a come point of 5 pays $15 if it wins. Our odds bet entry lists those payouts in full.

What are the odds of a come bet winning on its first roll?

A new come bet wins on its first roll 8 times in 36, about 22.2%, because 7 can be rolled six ways and 11 two ways. It loses on that roll 4 times in 36, about 11.1%, on a 2, 3 or 12. The other 24 combinations, about 66.7%, move it to a come point. From there a 7 is the most likely total, which is where the house wins back its edge. Over the whole bet, a come bet wins about 49.29% of the time. Our how to play craps guide shows the dice combinations.

Can you take down a come bet once it moves to a number?

Under standard craps rules, no: once a come bet moves to its number, it stays until that number or a 7 settles it, just like a pass line bet after the point. The bet is at its strongest on its first roll, so removing it later would hand players an edge. You can usually add or remove the odds bet behind it, though. RTG doesn’t publish its online craps rules in the listings we have, so check the help screen. Our craps pass line entry explains the same rule for the pass line.

What does don’t come mean in craps?

Don’t come is the reverse of a come bet: you bet against the dice after a point is set. On its first roll it wins on 2 or 3, loses on 7 or 11 and pushes on 12. If any other number rolls, it moves there and wins if a 7 arrives before that number repeats. It pays even money with a house edge of about 1.36%, a touch lower than the come bet’s 1.41%. On $500 of don’t come action that’s an average cost of about $6.80. Our craps game page covers the rest of the layout.

Can you make come bets at Planet 7, Royal Ace or Slot Madness?

Craps is reported in the RTG lobbies of Planet 7, Royal Ace and Slot Madness, so come bets should be there if the game follows standard rules. RTG’s craps limits, RTP and odds multiple aren’t published in third-party listings, so open the help screen to confirm. Bonus money is a poor fit: third-party reviews say craps doesn’t count on Planet 7’s free chip. All three casinos are offshore and not licensed by any US state, so check your state’s law. See Planet 7 table games for what reviewers list there.

Where can I play craps come bets legally in Mississippi?

In Mississippi, come bets are legal at the state’s licensed land-based casinos, not online. The Mississippi Gaming Commission says any casino game conducted online where money is paid and won is illegal, and a third-party count lists 25 commercial casinos plus the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians’ casinos. Casino gambling there starts at 21. Offshore sites, including our partners, aren’t licensed by Mississippi or any other US state. Read our Mississippi gambling laws page for the details.
