Blackjack meaning

Blackjack meaning has two parts: it is the name of the casino card game where you try to beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 without going over, and it is also the name of the best hand in that game, an ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards. That hand usually pays 3 to 2, so $15 on a $10 bet.

Key takeaways

  • Blackjack is both a game (beat the dealer without passing 21) and a hand (ace plus a 10-value card on the first two cards).
  • A natural blackjack usually pays 3:2; ordinary wins pay 1:1 and ties are a push.
  • Third-party catalogs list RTG blackjack games such as Super 21 at 99.6% RTP and Suit ’Em Up at 99.51%.
  • Online RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, and bonuses often weight blackjack at 60x or exclude it.

Blackjack meaning: the game and the hand

This entry is part of our casino glossary. As a game, blackjack pits each player against the dealer. Cards 2 to 10 count at face value, jacks, queens and kings count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11. You want a total higher than the dealer’s without going over 21, which is called busting.

As a hand, a blackjack (or “natural”) is an ace with any 10-value card as your first two cards. It beats every other 21, including a 21 made from three or more cards. Our full blackjack game guide covers the table version in depth; this entry focuses on the term and its numbers.

How a hand of blackjack plays out

  1. You place a bet, and the dealer deals two cards to you and two to the dealer, one of the dealer’s face up.
  2. If you have a blackjack, it is usually paid at once unless the dealer also has one, which is a push.
  3. Otherwise you choose to hit (take a card), stand, double down, split a pair or, where offered, surrender.
  4. The dealer then plays to fixed rules, typically drawing to 16 and standing on 17; some games make the dealer hit a soft 17.
  5. Hands closer to 21 than the dealer’s win; busted hands lose even if the dealer later busts too.

Whether your total is a soft hand (with an ace counting 11) or a hard hand changes the right decision, which is what basic strategy charts are built on. Our how to play blackjack guide covers each step.

Payout rules differ between versions, so read the table rules or help screen. Third-party listings describe RTG’s Suit ’Em Up Blackjack as paying 3:2 for a blackjack with the dealer hitting soft 17. If a game paid less than 3:2 for a natural, say 6:5, the same $10 blackjack would return $12 profit instead of $15, which costs you money every time it happens.

RTG blackjack games and their published RTP

RealTime Gaming, the studio behind most of the partner casinos we cover, offers several blackjack versions. Third-party catalogs give these figures; each assumes good play, and the operator’s version may differ, so check the game’s help screen.

Each has its own page: Super 21, Blackjack + Perfect Pairs, Face Up 21, Match Play 21 and Pontoon. The range for Perfect Pairs reflects the side bet: the base game sits near the top, and side bets usually carry a bigger edge. Blackjack house edge in dollars, and what strategy can do

Blackjack has one of the lower house edges in the casino when played well, but it is still an edge. Expected loss is total staked times the edge. Using Suit ’Em Up’s listed 99.51% RTP (a 0.49% edge), 100 hands at $10 means $1,000 staked and about $4.90 expected loss. At $25 a hand for 200 hands, it is $5,000 staked and about $24.50 expected. Real sessions vary far more than that.

Basic strategy reduces the house edge by choosing the mathematically best move for each hand; it doesn’t remove it. Card counting is history and theory for online play, because RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, as our card counting online guide explains. Betting systems such as Martingale don’t change the edge either.

Blackjack with casino bonuses

Bonuses at offshore casinos are built around slots, and blackjack is often excluded or weighted at a higher rollover. According to third-party reviews, Royal Ace applies 60x (bonus + deposit) on blackjack against 30x on slots, per LCB’s Royal Ace listing (opens in a new tab), and Planet 7’s free chip carries 60x on table games and video poker. SlotoCash’s own terms exclude table games by default.

At 60x, a $100 deposit with a $100 bonus means $12,000 of blackjack wagering. At a 0.49% edge, that is about $58.80 of expected loss, before any max cashout limit. Read our best bonus for blackjack page and the game weighting entry before you play a bonus on table games.

Frequently asked questions

What does blackjack mean in cards?

In cards, blackjack means a hand of an ace plus a 10-value card (10, jack, queen or king) as your first two cards, worth 21. It is also the name of the casino game built around reaching 21 without going over. A natural blackjack usually pays 3:2, so $15 profit on a $10 bet. See how to play blackjack for the full rules.

Is 21 the same as blackjack?

Not always. Any hand totaling 21 is a 21, but only an ace and a 10-value card as the first two cards is a blackjack. A three-card 21, such as 7-7-7, pays 1:1 like any other win, while a natural blackjack usually pays 3:2 and beats a multi-card 21. Our blackjack game page explains the payout rules.

What does a blackjack pay?

A natural blackjack usually pays 3:2: $15 profit on $10, or $37.50 on $25. Ordinary wins pay 1:1 and ties are a push, returning your stake. Some versions use different payouts, so check the rules screen. Third-party listings describe RTG’s Suit ’Em Up Blackjack as paying 3:2. Read what is the house edge on blackjack for the cost side.

Can you count cards in RTG blackjack online?

Not usefully. RNG blackjack reshuffles the cards for every hand, so there is no depleting shoe to track. Card counting is a land-based technique that depends on dealing through a shoe, and it has no effect online. Basic strategy can lower the house edge, but nothing removes it. Our answer to can you count cards online goes into the history.

What is the house edge on RTG blackjack?

Third-party catalogs list RTG’s Super 21 at 99.6% RTP (a 0.4% edge) and Suit ’Em Up at 99.51% (a 0.49% edge), assuming good play. Blackjack + Perfect Pairs is listed at 95.9% to 99.59%, the lower figure reflecting the side bet. At a 0.49% edge, $1,000 staked costs about $4.90 on average. See house edge explained.

Can I use a Royal Ace or SlotoCash bonus on blackjack?

Sometimes, but the terms are usually tougher. Royal Ace is reported by third-party reviewers to apply 60x on blackjack against 30x on slots, and SlotoCash’s own terms exclude table games by default. Playing an excluded game can void bonus winnings. Read the terms and our bonus game weighting guide before you use bonus money at the blackjack table.

Is blackjack a game of skill or luck?

Both. Each card is random, so luck decides individual hands, but your choices change the long-run cost. Basic strategy picks the best move for every hand and reduces the house edge, though the casino keeps an edge. No system guarantees profit. Our blackjack basic strategy guide shows the decisions in a chart.

Is online blackjack legal in Michigan?

Yes, online blackjack is legal in Michigan at casinos licensed under the Lawful Internet Gaming Act (PA 152 of 2019). Licensed play launched on January 22, 2021, and the Michigan Gaming Control Board lists 15 authorized online casino platform providers in 2026. Offshore casinos are a different matter: the board named Planet 7 in cease-and-desist letters on April 9, 2025 and Slot Madness on August 14, 2025, calling such sites illegal offshore operators. Those partners hold no Michigan license. The Michigan online casinos hub and cease-and-desist letters page cover the licensed market and the actions.

What does dealer hits soft 17 mean in blackjack?

It means the dealer must take another card when holding a soft 17, a 17 that includes an ace counted as 11, such as ace-6. Under the other common rule, the dealer stands on every 17. The difference changes a handful of basic strategy decisions, so the right chart depends on which rule the game uses. Third-party listings describe RTG's Suit 'Em Up Blackjack as a game where the dealer hits soft 17 and blackjack pays 3:2. The rule is usually printed on the table or help screen. Our soft hand entry and basic strategy entry explain why it matters.

Should you take insurance in blackjack?

No, basic strategy says to decline insurance every time. Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer's upcard is an ace, and it wins only if the dealer turns out to hold a blackjack. It doesn't protect your main bet in any real sense; it's a separate wager with its own edge for the house. Taking it on a $10 hand usually costs another $5. Skipping it, along with other side bets, keeps the cost of blackjack close to the low figures listed for games like Super 21. Our insurance entry and blackjack basic strategy guide explain the reasoning.

Can I play blackjack on my phone at RTG casinos?

Yes, the RTG partner casinos are reported to offer browser play on phones, though none lists a store app. Third-party sources describe Planet 7 as instant play in a mobile browser on Android and iOS, and report Slot Madness running in Chrome and Safari on Android and iPhone. Whether a particular blackjack version loads on mobile depends on the game, so check the lobby on your device. A phone uses the same RNG and rules as a desktop. Our best mobile casinos list and instant play entry explain browser play.

What are the table limits in RTG blackjack?

Table limits aren't clearly published for RTG blackjack, and each casino can set its own. SlotCatalog lists RTG's standard Blackjack with a minimum bet of 13 and a maximum of 3,100, but doesn't name the currency, so treat those figures as a rough guide only. The game's own bet panel or help screen shows the real limits at your casino. Limits matter for budgeting: a session of 50 hands at $25 puts $1,250 in action. Our online blackjack page covers the game, and the best blackjack casinos list compares where it's reported.
