Payback meaning in casinos

Payback meaning: payback, or payback percentage, is the share of all money staked on a game that it returns to players on average over a very long run. A 95% payback means about $95 back for every $100 wagered across millions of plays, so the casino keeps about $5. Online, the same figure is usually called RTP.

Key takeaways

  • Payback percentage and RTP mean the same thing: the long-run share of stakes returned.
  • House edge = 100% − payback, so 96% payback means a 4% edge.
  • Expected loss = total staked × house edge; at 96% payback, $500 of spins costs about $20 on average.
  • Payback is a long-run average and says nothing certain about one session.

Payback meaning: payback percentage defined

Every casino game is built to return less than it takes in. Payback percentage is the figure that says how much less. If a slot's payback is 96%, then across an enormous number of spins it returns $96 of every $100 staked. The missing $4 is the house edge, the casino's built-in margin.

"Payback" is the older, land-based term you'll still hear for slot machines in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Online casinos and game studios mostly say RTP, short for return to player. They describe the same number. Both live in our casino glossary.

Don't confuse payback with cashback. A cashback promotion refunds a share of your losses under the casino's terms; payback is a property of the game itself.

Payback percentage in dollars: expected loss

The useful sum is: expected loss = total amount staked × (100% − payback). Total staked means every bet added together, not your deposit. Two hundred $1.00 spins stake $200 even if you only deposited $50 and recycled wins.

  1. Find the game's published payback or RTP in its help screen.
  2. Estimate your total stakes: bet size × number of plays per hour × hours.
  3. Multiply total stakes by the house edge to get the average cost.
  4. Set a budget that covers that cost plus normal swings, and stop when it's gone.

Short sessions can land far from the average either way. That spread is volatility, and it's why a 97% game can still empty a small balance quickly. Our house edge explained guide has more worked examples.

Payback figures for RTG games

RealTime Gaming titles span a wide payback range. These figures come from third-party catalogs and reviewers such as GamesHub's RTG pages (opens in a new tab), not from the studio:

Selected RTG payback figures (third-party sources)
GameTypePayback / RTP listed
Super 21Blackjack variant99.6%
Jacks or BetterVideo poker99.54%
Suit 'Em Up BlackjackBlackjack variant99.51%
Swindle All the WaySlot98.5%
Coyote CashSlot97.5%
European RouletteTable game97.3%
Aladdin's WishesSlot93%
Fish CatchSpecialty91%

Two cautions. First, the highest table and video poker figures assume you play the best possible strategy; mistakes lower your real payback. Second, some RTG slots, such as 777 and Fortune Frog, are listed with an RTP range, which means the casino can run a different setting from the catalog figure. Check the help screen in the game you're actually playing.

Who checks payback percentages?

In the seven states that license online casinos, state regulators oversee the licensed operators and the games they offer. Offshore casinos sit outside that oversight. For RTG, third-party reviewers such as LCB's RealTime Gaming page (opens in a new tab) report that games are tested by Technical Systems Testing (TST), and a third-party review of Planet 7 reports its software is tested by GLI. Neither is a US state regulator, and none of our partners publishes per-game payback audits that we could verify.

Our guide to offshore vs state-licensed casinos explains what that difference means for complaints and protection, and how RNGs work covers the randomness behind every payback figure.

Payback myths that cost players money

"A machine that hasn't paid back lately is due." Payback is a long-run average, not a schedule; each spin is independent. "Higher bets get higher payback." On most online slots, the percentage is the same at every stake. "A 99% game is basically break-even." It still loses about $1 per $100 staked on average, and much more in a bad session. Our casino myths page covers more.

All three of these partners run RTG games, including titles in the table above where their lobbies carry them; third-party reviews name Cash Bandits 2 and Cash Bandits 3 at Planet 7 and Royal Ace, and Slot Madness is reported to run RTG only. Check the casino's lobby for specific games. They are offshore casinos, not licensed or regulated by any US state, so there's no state regulator to complain to and no state check on game payback. Check your state's law first. We earn commission from these links, and the order is commercial.

Planet 7 Casino: $2,750 Welcome Bonus + 45 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). LCB's Planet 7 listing (opens in a new tab) reports a 200% match with 30x (bonus + deposit) wagering on slots and a $1,000 max cashout, plus casino minimums of $30 by card and $5 by Bitcoin Lightning. The official terms weren't confirmed, so the terms shown at sign-up apply.

Royal Ace Casino: $2,500 Welcome Bonus + 35 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Third-party sources disagree, one reporting 200% up to $4,000 with 30x wagering on slots, 60x on blackjack and video poker, and a max cashout of 10x the deposit, another 250% up to $2,500. Check the current terms first.

Slot Madness Casino: $2,500 Welcome Bonus + 50 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Third-party reviews report a 275% package with 30x (bonus + deposit) wagering on slots, a $30 minimum and no max cashout, which differs from our link's headline; read the terms at sign-up.

Bonus wagering is slot-focused, and table games are often excluded or weighted lower, so the high-payback table games above may not count. Gambling costs money, and every payback below 100% means losses over time. For support, call or text 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).

Frequently asked questions

What does payback mean in gambling?

Payback is the percentage of all money wagered on a game that it returns to players on average over a very long period. A 94% payback returns about $94 per $100 staked across millions of plays, and the casino keeps the other $6. It's the same measure online casinos call RTP. See RTP meaning and how slot RTP works.

Is payback percentage the same as RTP?

Yes. Payback percentage is the traditional land-based term and RTP (return to player) is the usual online term, but both describe the long-run share of stakes a game returns. Some regulators and older guides say payback; game studios and catalogs mostly say RTP. Read our casino math basics guide and house edge meaning.

What is a good payback percentage for slots?

Higher is better for the player, and many RTG slots in third-party data sit between 95% and 97.5%, with Swindle All the Way listed at 98.5%. Even so, every figure below 100% means you lose on average. Choose a game you enjoy within your budget rather than chasing a number. See the best high RTP casinos list and bankroll management.

How do I calculate my expected loss from payback?

Multiply your total stakes by the house edge, which is 100% minus the payback. Four hundred $0.50 spins stake $200; at 96% payback, the expected loss is $200 × 4% = $8. Real sessions vary widely around that. Our gambling budget guide and session meaning entry help you plan around it.

Can a casino change a game's payback?

For games offered with more than one setting, yes: some RTG slots, including 777 and Fortune Frog, are listed with an RTP range, so the operator chooses the version. That's why the figure in the game's own help screen matters more than a catalog number. Offshore casinos aren't overseen by any US state regulator. See RNG meaning and are offshore casinos safe.

Does payback percentage apply to one session?

No. Payback describes the average over a vast number of plays, so a single session can return 50% or 300% of what you staked. Over time, results drift toward the published figure, which is why steady play tends to cost money. Don't read a good or bad session as a sign of what's next. See gambler's fallacy and volatility meaning.

What is the payback percentage on RTG video poker?

RTG video poker carries some of the highest payback figures in its catalog, from about 97% to 99.54% in third-party data. GamesHub lists Jacks or Better at 99.54%, SlotCatalog lists Loose Deuces at 99.07% and All American Poker at 98.65%, and GamesHub gives Deuces Wild a 97% to 99% range. Those numbers assume perfect strategy for the exact pay table, so real payback drops with every misplayed hold. At 99.54%, 500 hands at $1 cost about $2.30 on average. See the Jacks or Better game page and our video poker strategy guide.

What payback do progressive jackpot slots have?

Progressive jackpot slots tend to list lower payback figures than standard slots, because the jackpot is paid out of the same return. SlotCatalog gives RTG's Aztec's Millions 94% and Aladdin's Wishes 93%, while PokerListings gives Aladdin's Wishes 95%. At 94%, $500 of spins costs about $30 on average, and that figure already includes the rare jackpot hit, so most sessions return less. Check the help screen for the payback your casino runs. Read our progressive jackpot meaning entry and the Aztec's Millions review.

How does payback change the cost of clearing a bonus?

Payback decides how much a bonus's wagering requirement costs you on average, so a higher-payback slot makes the same rollover cheaper. Take SlotoCash's published 25x (deposit + bonus) rule on a $100 deposit with a $200 match: $300 × 25 = $7,500 to wager. At 96% payback, the expected cost is $300; at 97.5%, the figure listed for Coyote Cash, it's $187.50. Bonus terms may exclude some games, so check eligibility first. Our wagering requirements explained guide and expected value of a bonus method show the full sum.

Does a higher payback mean a slot pays out more often?

No, a higher payback means more money returned on average, not more frequent wins. How often a slot pays is its hit frequency, and how bumpy those payouts are is its volatility. A 97% slot can pay rarely but in large amounts, while a 94% slot can hand back small wins on most spins and still cost more over time. Payback is the long-run average; the other two describe the ride along the way. Read our hit frequency meaning entry and the slot volatility explained guide.

Is payback percentage the opposite of house edge?

Yes, payback and house edge are two sides of the same number: house edge equals 100% minus the payback. A game with 96% payback has a 4% house edge, so the casino keeps $4 of every $100 staked on average. A 99.6% game such as RTG's Super 21 has a 0.4% edge. Players tend to quote payback, while casino math guides often quote the edge, but they always add up to 100%. Our house edge explained guide and Super 21 game page show the conversion in dollars.

What payback does online roulette have?

Online roulette payback depends on the wheel: about 97.3% on single-zero European roulette and about 94.74% on double-zero American roulette. GamesHub lists RTG's European Roulette at 97.3%, which matches the 2.70% edge of one green pocket. The second zero on an American wheel pushes the edge to 5.26%. On $1,000 of total bets, that's an average cost of $27 on the European wheel and about $53 on the American one, for exactly the same payouts. See the European Roulette game page and our American roulette entry.

Who checks slot payback for online casinos in Michigan?

In Michigan, the Michigan Gaming Control Board regulates the state-licensed online casinos and oversees the games they offer, which is the kind of payback oversight offshore sites lack. Michigan is one of seven states that license online casinos. The board has sent cease-and-desist letters to offshore operators it calls illegal, naming Planet 7 on April 9, 2025 and Slot Madness on August 14, 2025, both partners on this page. No US state checks the payback of games at those sites. Read our Michigan online casino guide and the cease-and-desist letters page.
