Can I play online casinos in Massachusetts?

Can I play online casinos in Massachusetts? Not at any state-licensed site, because Massachusetts licenses no online casinos. The Attorney General's office says offering online casino games without a Massachusetts Gaming Commission license violates state gaming laws. What residents can legally do online is bet on sports through seven licensed apps.

Key takeaways

  • Massachusetts licenses no real-money online casinos; only online sports betting is licensed.
  • The Attorney General sent cease-and-desist letters to Bovada (October 3, 2024) and to BetOnline.ag and Sportsbetting.ag (June 25, 2025).
  • Seven sportsbooks hold Massachusetts Gaming Commission approval, and the state has three commercial casinos, as reported.
  • Offshore casinos aren't licensed by Massachusetts or any US state, so there is no state regulator to complain to.
  • Help is free: the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-327-5050) and 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).

Can I play online casinos in Massachusetts legally?

No state-licensed option exists. Massachusetts has not authorized real-money online casino games, and an industry tracker from the American Gaming Association lists online casinos as not legal there. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission licenses sports wagering and the state's land-based casinos, but no online slots or table game sites.

The Attorney General's office has gone further than a simple warning. In its October 2024 action against Bovada, the office said that offering online casino games in the state without an MGC license violates Massachusetts gaming laws. That puts every offshore casino serving the state outside its licensing system.

This page explains what the law covers, what is legal online, and what follows if a Massachusetts resident uses an offshore casino anyway. It is one of our online casino questions answered for US players. For the full legal background, see the Massachusetts gambling laws page and the Massachusetts online casinos hub.

The picture splits cleanly. Sports betting is licensed and live, the Lottery is state-run, and casino gaming exists only in person. Here is the status of each form as recorded at October 28, 2026.

What the Attorney General and MGC say about offshore casinos

Attorney General Campbell's office has used both gaming law and the state consumer protection statute, M.G.L. c. 93A, against offshore operators. The AG's Bovada letter (opens in a new tab) demanded refunds for Massachusetts customers and said claims of being USA-based were deceptive under c. 93A.

June 25, 2025BetOnline.ag and Sportsbetting.agCease-and-desist letters for offshore casino and sports betting operations

The June 2025 release (opens in a new tab) also carries the Gaming Commission's view: offshore operators aren't licensed by any state and may refuse to pay winning bets. None of our partner casinos is named in either Massachusetts action, but neither is licensed by Massachusetts.

Both letters target operators, not players. The state's records don't describe prosecuting individual residents, and this page doesn't predict what would happen to a player. Read can I get in trouble for playing online casinos for the wider picture.

Massachusetts sports betting apps: the licensed option

Online sports betting is the one licensed internet product. The MGC's official seal-of-approval program lists seven approved operators: Bally Bet, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, Fanatics, FanDuel and Penn/ESPN Bet. A third-party report says the law was signed on August 10, 2022, with launch planned for early 2023; the exact launch date wasn't confirmed on an official page.

Those apps sit inside the state's rules, which brings dispute routes and oversight that an offshore site can't offer. The Massachusetts sports betting page covers how they work, and is sports betting legal in my state compares Massachusetts with the rest of the country.

The Lottery, online ticket plans and land-based casinos

The Massachusetts State Lottery got approval for online sales in 2024. A WGBH report dated April 28, 2026 said a phone launch was expected that summer; whether it went live wasn't confirmed in the sources checked, so look at the Lottery's own site for current status.

For casino play in person, the AGA counts three commercial casinos in the state. Residents in Boston, Worcester and Springfield, the three largest cities by 2024 Census estimates, live within the state's licensed system for retail gaming, while online casino gaming remains unlicensed everywhere in the state.

Sweepstakes casinos in Massachusetts

A third-party tracker reports that no sweepstakes casino ban has passed in Massachusetts and that bill H 4431 stalled. That leaves the dual-currency sites, with Gold Coins for play and Sweeps Coins that can be redeemed, in a gray zone rather than formally approved.

Several other states have acted, including New York, New Jersey, California and Connecticut. The sweepstakes casinos Massachusetts page and the sweepstakes casino bans tracker explain the model and the state-by-state picture.

Real money online casinos in Massachusetts: the offshore risks

Every real-money online casino open to Massachusetts residents is offshore. That changes what protection you have in practice.

  • No state complaint route: the MGC can't order an unlicensed site to pay you.
  • No state-backed protection of balances if a casino delays, voids winnings or closes.
  • Terms are set by the casino, including weekly withdrawal caps and max cashout rules.
  • Licenses, where published, come from places such as Anjouan or Curaçao, not from any US state.
  • Card deposits are often declined because banks treat gambling payments as high risk.

The player protections offshore vs licensed guide sets the differences side by side, and are offshore casinos safe covers what reviewers report about payouts.

Before you play online casinos in Massachusetts: a checklist

If you're weighing an offshore site anyway, go in with eyes open. These steps keep the decision informed.

  1. Read the state's position: the AG says unlicensed online casino games violate Massachusetts gaming laws.
  2. Check who runs the casino and what license it publishes, if any, and note conflicts between sources.
  3. Read the withdrawal rules: minimums, weekly caps, fees and processing times as published.
  4. Read the bonus terms before you accept one, including wagering, max cashout and excluded games.
  5. Set a budget you can afford to lose, and use deposit limits or self-exclusion if the site offers them.
  6. Keep records of deposits and withdrawals for your tax return.

Taxes and problem gambling help in Massachusetts

Gambling winnings are taxable federal income wherever you win them. For payments in 2026, the IRS sets a $2,000 W-2G reporting threshold for slot, bingo and keno wins, and from tax year 2026 the loss deduction is reported to be capped at 90% of losses, limited to winnings; check IRS guidance. The gambling taxes page goes deeper.

For help, the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline is 1-800-327-5050, or text GAMB to 800327, through gamblinghelplinema.org (opens in a new tab). The national line run by NCPG is 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), with call, text and chat. See the responsible gambling hub for blocking tools and self-exclusion.

  • Silver Oak Casino: $2,500 Welcome Bonus + 50 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Its own site advertises a different package, 100% on each of ten deposits; the offer page says 30x wagering while the general terms say 40x on slots and 60x on video poker, with deposits from $30. The casino publishes an Anjouan license held by Primrose Media Limited, and Michigan's regulator named it in an April 9, 2025 cease-and-desist action.
  • Planet 7 Casino: $2,750 Welcome Bonus + 45 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Third-party reviews report 30x (bonus + deposit) on slots and a $1,000 max cashout on its 200% code; its official terms couldn't be checked. Reviewers disagree on its license (Costa Rica or none), and Michigan named it on April 9, 2025.
  • Royal Ace Casino: $2,500 Welcome Bonus + 35 Free Spins, via our link (new players, 21+ or 18+ where allowed, terms apply). Third-party sources disagree on its published package (200% up to $4,000 versus 250% up to $2,500 plus 35 spins); one reports 30x on slots and a max cashout of 10x the deposit.

As a worked example, a $100 deposit with a 100% match gives a $200 balance. At 30x that balance, you'd need $6,000 in bets; at 40x, $8,000. The house edge applies on every bet, so losses are likely before you finish. Bonuses are slot-focused, and table games are often excluded or weighted lower. None of these casinos publishes a list of accepted states, so confirm at sign-up. Read the Silver Oak review, Planet 7 review and Royal Ace review first.

Frequently asked questions

Which online gambling is legal in Massachusetts?

Online sports betting is the only licensed internet product. Online sports betting is legal through seven operators approved by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, while online casino games are not licensed at all. The Attorney General's office says offering online casino games without an MGC license violates state gaming laws. Lottery products are run by the state, and online ticket sales were approved in 2024, though a live launch wasn't confirmed in the sources checked. The real money casinos in Massachusetts page has the detail.

Are there legal real money online casinos in Massachusetts?

No, none holds a Massachusetts license. The state hasn't authorized internet casino gaming, so every real-money casino site available to residents is offshore and unlicensed by any US state. Seven states do license online casinos, including neighboring Connecticut and Rhode Island, and players physically inside those states can use their licensed sites. The states with legal online casinos page lists them with their regulators.

Will I get in trouble for playing at an offshore casino from Massachusetts?

The state's published actions target operators, not players. Both Attorney General cease-and-desist actions, against Bovada in 2024 and against BetOnline.ag and Sportsbetting.ag in 2025, were directed at the businesses. That isn't a promise about any individual case, and state law still treats unlicensed casino games as a violation. The practical risk is losing money with no regulator to help. Read is it illegal to play at offshore casinos for the national view.

Which sports betting apps are legal in Massachusetts?

Seven operators carry Massachusetts Gaming Commission approval. The MGC's seal-of-approval list names Bally Bet, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, Fanatics, FanDuel and Penn/ESPN Bet. A third-party report dates the law to August 10, 2022. Licensed apps come with state oversight and a complaint route, which offshore sportsbooks lack. The Massachusetts sports betting page explains the rules and how to spot the official seal.

How old must you be to gamble at a Massachusetts casino?

The casino age is 21, according to the American Gaming Association's 2026 state report. The minimum ages for sports betting and the Lottery weren't confirmed in the official sources checked, so look at the operator's terms or the MGC before you sign up. Offshore casinos set their own age rules, which may be lower than the state's, but that doesn't change Massachusetts law. The gambling age by state table compares all states.

Can I play sweepstakes casinos in Massachusetts?

They haven't been banned, but they aren't licensed either. A third-party tracker reports that bill H 4431, which would have addressed them, stalled. Sweepstakes sites use two currencies, Gold Coins for play and Sweeps Coins that can be redeemed for prizes, and argue they aren't gambling. Several states disagree and have banned the model since 2025. See are sweepstakes casinos legal for how the bans work.

Do I have to pay tax on online casino winnings in Massachusetts?

Yes, gambling winnings are taxable federal income, including winnings from offshore sites. Casinos that file Forms W-2G use a $2,000 threshold for slot wins in 2026, but you must report all winnings either way. From tax year 2026, losses are reported to be deductible only up to 90%, and only against winnings; check IRS guidance. State tax treatment is separate. See do I pay tax on casino winnings for more.

Where can I get help with gambling in Massachusetts?

Call the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline on 1-800-327-5050 or text GAMB to 800327. It's free and confidential. The National Problem Gambling Helpline, run by NCPG, is 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) by call or text, with online chat too. Gamblers Anonymous runs meetings, and blocking software such as Gamban can stop access to gambling sites. The National Problem Gambling Helpline page explains how the national line works.

Can I play Connecticut or Rhode Island online casinos from Massachusetts?

Only while you are physically inside Connecticut or Rhode Island, both of which license real-money online casinos. Licensed apps check your location before every session, so a Boston or Worcester resident can play after crossing the border but not from home. Back in Massachusetts, real-money casino play on those apps is blocked. You'll still need to meet that state's age and identity rules. Our Connecticut online casinos and Rhode Island online casinos pages explain each market and its regulator.

Do Massachusetts sports betting apps offer casino games?

No. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission licenses sports wagering online, but the state has not authorized internet casino games, so its seven approved operators can offer only sports bets there. Brands such as BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings and FanDuel are on the MGC's approved list for sports, and any casino products they run elsewhere stay locked to players in states that license them. Our Massachusetts mobile casinos page covers phone play, and offshore vs state-licensed casinos explains what licensing adds.

How long do offshore casino withdrawals take in Massachusetts?

Often two to three weeks at some partners, before any bank or blockchain delay. Silver Oak's own terms describe a 7–10 business day review followed by 7–10 business days for payment, with a weekly limit starting at $2,500 and Bitcoin payouts from $50. Third-party reviewers report pending times of 7 to 10 days at Royal Ace. The MGC can't intervene with an unlicensed site, so plan around those timelines before you deposit. Our fast payout casinos in Massachusetts page and the withdrawal times guide compare methods.

Are crypto casinos allowed in Massachusetts?

No crypto casino holds a Massachusetts license, and the Attorney General says offering online casino games without an MGC license breaks state gaming laws, whatever the payment method. Offshore sites favor crypto partly on cost: Silver Oak's own banking page lists Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum deposits from $30 with no fee, against 3–10% fees on card deposits. Crypto transfers generally can't be reversed, though, so mistakes and disputes are costly. See crypto casinos in Massachusetts and our crypto fees guide.

Can I get a refund from an offshore casino in Massachusetts?

Not through any routine state process, since the MGC has no authority over unlicensed sites. The Attorney General did demand refunds for Massachusetts customers in its October 2024 letter to Bovada, using the consumer protection statute, M.G.L. c. 93A, but that was one enforcement action, not a general refund scheme. For other casinos, your options are the casino's own complaint process and any licensing body it names. Read can I get my money back from a casino and our Bovada review for that case.
