Ways to win meaning: instead of fixed paylines, a ways slot pays for matching symbols on neighboring reels, starting from reel 1, in any row. The headline number, such as 243 or 1,024, is simply every possible left-to-right route across the grid, and your stake covers all of them.
Ways games pay matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any row position.
The count is the rows on each reel multiplied together: 3×3×3×3×3 = 243.
You pay one total stake per spin; there are no lines to switch off.
A bigger ways count doesn't mean a higher RTP or a better deal.

Ways to win meaning in plain English
A ways-to-win slot drops the idea of drawn lines. Any symbol on reel 1 can connect with a matching symbol anywhere on reel 2, then anywhere on reel 3, and so on, as long as the run stays unbroken from the left. That's why these games show a number like "243 ways" where a classic slot would show "25 lines".
It's part of our casino glossary, and it sits next to its opposite, paylines. Both systems use the same building blocks: a paytable that sets each symbol's value, wilds that substitute, and scatters that usually pay anywhere and start features.
Where 243, 1,024 and 4,096 ways come from
The count is just multiplication. Take the number of visible symbol positions on each reel and multiply them. A 5x3 grid gives 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243. Add a fourth row and you get 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 1,024. Grids with uneven reels follow the same rule.
Some games change the count mid-play. Catalogs list RTG's Warrior Conquest as starting at 27 ways and reaching up to 729, and Buffalo Mania Deluxe at 4,096 ways expandable to 46,656. Sources don't always agree: PokerListings' RTG catalog (opens in a new tab) lists Buffalo Mania Deluxe with 25 paylines while SlotCatalog lists 4,096 ways, so the in-game help screen is the final word.
How a ways-to-win payout is counted
When the same symbol appears more than once on a reel, each copy creates a separate way. Picture a 243-ways spin where a tiger shows twice on reel 1, once on reel 2 and twice on reel 3. That's 2 × 1 × 2 = 4 ways of three tigers, so the game pays the three-tiger prize four times.
Here's a hypothetical dollar version. Suppose the paytable says three tigers pay 0.5x your total stake and you bet $1.00. Four ways of three tigers would return 4 × $0.50 = $2.00. The numbers are made up to show the counting; each game's paytable sets the real values.
Find the leftmost reel and check which symbols appear on it.
Follow each symbol to reel 2; it needs at least one match there to continue.
Keep going right until a reel has no match; that's the length of the win.
Multiply the count of that symbol on each counted reel to get the number of ways.
Multiply ways by the paytable value for that length to get the payout.
Which is better: ways to win or paylines?
Neither is better on return. The game designer sets the RTP across everything that can happen, so a 243-ways game and a 25-line game can have the same expected cost. What changes is the feel: ways games tend to land many small connected wins, while line games depend more on where symbols stop.

Because ways games charge one total stake, the dollar math is simple. At $0.50 a spin, 200 spins put $100 through the game; at a 96% RTP the long-run average cost of that is about $4, though any single session can land far from it. Our RTP meaning and volatility meaning entries explain why.
Common myths about all-ways slots
"More ways means you win more." You may see more frequent small hits, but many return less than the stake. The house edge is the same whether a game has 243 or 4,096 ways.
"A game that's been quiet is due a big ways hit." Each spin is independent, as our gambler's fallacy guide explains. No sequence, bet size or timing makes a ways game pay more.

We picked these three because each has ways-to-win titles named in its own or third-party game lists. SlotoCash's homepage game list (opens in a new tab) names Ritchie Valens La Bamba and Buffalo Mania: Thunder Springs, and Silver Oak's mobile casino page (opens in a new tab) names Vegas Lux. A third-party review reports Plentiful Treasure and Mighty Drums, both listed as 243-ways games, at Slot Madness. Lobbies change, so check the casino's lobby.

Frequently asked questions
What does 243 ways to win mean?
It means the game pays matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left in any row, and a 5-reel, 3-row grid allows 243 such routes (3 multiplied by itself five times). You don't pick lines; one stake covers every route. The figure says nothing about RTP or how often you'll win. Our Panda Magic review covers one 243-ways game in depth, and how slot RTP works explains the return.
Is 1,024 ways better than 243 ways?
Not in terms of return. A 1,024-ways game simply has four rows instead of three, so there are more possible routes across the reels. The designer still sets the RTP for the whole game, and a 243-ways title can return more than a 1,024-ways one. Compare the published RTP and volatility instead. See volatility meaning and the best high RTP casinos list.
Can I choose how many ways to play?
Usually not. Ways games charge one total stake that covers every route, so there's nothing to switch off. You control the cost by lowering the stake per spin. That makes budgeting easy: stake × number of spins = total wagered. Our bankroll management guide and bet max meaning entry cover sizing your bets.
Do ways-to-win slots pay both directions?
Most pay from left to right only. A few games are listed as paying both ways, meaning a matching run can also start from the rightmost reel; RTG's Vegas Lux is described that way in catalog data alongside its 720 ways. The help screen states the direction. Read our paylines meaning entry and the RTG software guide for related rules.
What does multiway expansion mean?
It means the grid grows during play, so the number of ways rises. Catalogs list RTG's Buffalo Mania Deluxe at 4,096 ways expandable to 46,656, and Buffalo Mania: Thunder Springs with a multiway expansion feature. A larger grid creates more routes but doesn't change the game's long-run return. See bonus round meaning and our Buffalo Mania Deluxe review.
Are ways-to-win slots good for bonus wagering?
They count like any other slot at most casinos, usually at 100% toward wagering, but that's set by each casino's terms, not by the game type. What matters more is the RTP, the max-bet rule and whether the game is excluded. Progressive titles are often excluded. Read our game weighting entry and best bonus for slots guide before you commit.
Is a 243-ways slot cheaper to play than a 25-line slot?
Not by design; the cost depends on your total stake and the game’s RTP, not on ways or lines. A $0.50 spin costs $0.50 whether it covers 243 ways or 25 lines at 2 cents each. Over 300 spins that puts $150 through the game. At Panda Magic’s third-party listed 95% RTP, the average cost is about $7.50, and on a 96.25% game such as Sweet 16 it falls to about $5.63. Pick on RTP, then size the stake. Our casino math basics guide and Sweet 16 review show the working.
Which RTG slots have 243 ways to win?
Third-party catalogs list many RTG titles at 243 ways, including Panda Magic, Sweet 16, Ape King, Witchy Wins, Frog Fortunes, Legendary Luck, Plentiful Treasure and Mighty Drums. Reported RTPs vary across them: 96.25% for Sweet 16, Ape King and Legendary Luck, 96% for Witchy Wins and Frog Fortunes, and 95% for Panda Magic, while none is published for Plentiful Treasure or Mighty Drums. Catalog data can differ from the live game, so check the help screen and the casino’s lobby. Start with our Witchy Wins review or the best RTG casinos list.
What does 3,125 ways to win mean in Heavenly Treasures?
It means Heavenly Treasures uses a 5-reel, 5-row grid, so the ways count is 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 5, or 3,125 left-to-right routes. Third-party catalogs list the RTG slot at 96.25% RTP with a 2,500x max win. The large ways count means more possible connections each spin, but the top prize is modest next to games such as Panda Magic’s listed 125,000x, which shows that ways and payout size are separate things. Volatility isn’t published for it. Read our Heavenly Treasures review and our slot multiplier entry.
How do wilds create extra ways to win?
A wild counts as a match for most symbols in its reel position, so one wild can extend several runs at once. Say reel 1 shows a tiger and a monkey, and reel 2 has a wild in one row. That wild connects both, so each symbol only needs a match on reel 3 to pay. Stacked wilds that fill a whole reel connect every symbol that has reached it. Wilds usually don’t replace scatters, so check the paytable. Our wild symbol entry and scatter entry explain both symbols.
Are ways-to-win slots high volatility?
Not necessarily; ways-to-win slots range from low to high volatility. Third-party catalogs rate Scuba Fishing, Frog Fortunes, Mighty Drums and Halloween Treasures as low, Lovable Pets and Witchy Wins as medium, and Panda Magic, Legendary Luck and Eternal Love as high. The ways count tells you how wins connect, while volatility describes how the return is spread between small and large payouts. On a small budget, a lower-volatility ways game tends to last longer. Our slot volatility explained guide and Frog Fortunes review go further.
Can I play ways-to-win slots on my phone?
Yes, at casinos that offer RTG games in a mobile browser, ways-to-win titles generally play the same way they do on desktop. Silver Oak’s mobile casino page, for example, names Vegas Lux, a 720-ways RTG slot. The grid is smaller on a phone, so open the help screen to see how the game counts ways and which direction it pays. Lobbies differ by casino and change over time, so check what each offers before depositing. Our best mobile casinos list and Vegas Lux review have more.
