What is ante? An ante is the bet you place before any cards are dealt, and it's your entry fee to the hand. In casino poker games such as Tri Card Poker and Caribbean Stud, you look at your cards after the ante and then either fold, giving it up, or add a second bet to play on against the dealer.
An ante is a compulsory opening bet placed before the deal.
In dealer-versus-player poker games, folding loses the ante; playing on adds a second bet, often equal to or double the ante.
SlotCatalog lists a 95.51% return for RTG's Tri Card Poker, an average cost of $4.49 per $100 bet.
Table games are often excluded from bonuses, so most players play ante games with cash only.

What is ante? The plain definition
An ante is a fixed bet everyone in the hand must make before seeing a card. In a poker room, every player antes into a shared pot, which gives the hand something to play for. In casino table games, you ante against the house, and that bet decides what your later bets will be.
Choose your chip value and place it on the ante spot.
Add any optional side bet the game offers; it's separate from the ante.
Receive your cards and look at them.
Fold to give up the ante and end the hand, or place the second bet (called play, raise or call) to continue.
The dealer reveals its hand, and both bets are settled by the game's rules and pay table.
Some games also ask the dealer to qualify with a minimum hand. Under standard rules, when the dealer doesn't qualify, the ante is usually paid and the second bet returned. Check the help screen, because RTG's exact rules weren't published in the sources available to us.
The ante in each game: what is ante worth?
The second bet is tied to the ante, so the ante sets your full stake. The table shows how the main games use it under standard rules, with RTG figures where third parties publish them.

Because the extra bet multiplies your stake, a $10 ante in Caribbean Stud is really a $30 decision whenever you play on. Size your ante to the full amount you might put down.
What an ante costs in dollars
Expected loss is total bet × house edge. SlotCatalog (opens in a new tab) lists a 95.51% return for RTG's Tri Card Poker, which means an average cost of $4.49 per $100 bet; it doesn't say whether that's measured on the ante or on all bets, so treat it as a guide. Over 100 hands with a $10 ante and a $10 play bet each time, $2,000 is bet in total, and at that rate the average cost is about $89.80.
Folding often looks cheaper in the moment because you only lose $10. Over many hands, though, the ante you give up on weak cards is part of how the game's edge is collected. A strategy chart can tell you when to fold, but no fold rule removes the house edge. See our three card poker guide for the decisions.
Bet sizes don't change your odds. Raising the ante after a loss, as in the Martingale system, just increases what you can lose.
Ante games and bonus terms
Ante-based table games rarely help with bonus wagering. SlotoCash's welcome terms (opens in a new tab) exclude table games by default and say play on other games voids promotion winnings. Silver Oak's terms (opens in a new tab) set 60x for table games against 40x for slots and exclude several table games outright. Both are first-party terms.
For a $100 bonus with $100 deposited, if 60x applied to deposit plus bonus, you'd need $12,000 of table-game bets; at a 4.49% edge, that play would cost about $539 on average. Read the bonus game weighting rules before you mix a bonus with an ante game.

Frequently asked questions
What is ante in poker?
An ante is a compulsory bet placed before the cards are dealt. In poker rooms every player antes into the pot; in casino poker games you ante against the dealer, then choose to fold or add a second bet. It's the cost of seeing your hand. Our Tri Card Poker page shows a common ante game.
What happens to the ante if I fold?
You lose it. Folding ends your hand, and the ante stays with the house. That's why the ante is part of how the game's edge is collected over time, even though each fold looks like a small loss. A strategy chart can show when folding is the better choice; see our three card poker guide.
Is the ante the same as the blind?
Not quite. Both are forced bets, but an ante is paid by everyone before the deal, while blinds are paid by one or two players in turn in games like Texas Hold'em. Casino table games such as Caribbean Hold'em use an ante against the dealer instead of blinds. Our Caribbean Hold'em page explains that game.
How much is the play bet compared with the ante?
It depends on the game. Under standard rules, Tri Card Poker's play bet equals the ante, while Caribbean Stud's raise and Caribbean Hold'em's call are twice the ante. So a $10 ante can become a $20 or $30 hand. Check the help screen in your game for the exact rule, and see our Caribbean Stud Poker page.
Can I play ante games with a casino bonus?
Usually it's a poor idea. SlotoCash's terms exclude table games by default and void winnings from other games, and Silver Oak's terms set 60x for table games and ban some outright. Playing ante games with a bonus active can mean huge wagering or forfeited winnings. Read the terms first; our table games bonus page explains the usual limits.
Does a bigger ante improve my odds?
No. The size of your ante changes how much you win or lose, not the chance of any outcome. The house edge applies as a percentage of everything you bet, so bigger antes simply raise the average cost per hand. Choose a stake that fits your budget; our bankroll management guide can help.
What is the ante bet in Tri Card Poker?
In Tri Card Poker, the ante is the bet you place before your three cards are dealt, and it decides the size of the play bet. Under standard rules the play bet equals the ante, so a $5 ante becomes a $10 hand if you continue, and folding costs the $5. SlotCatalog lists RTG's Tri Card Poker with a 95.51% return and a 40x top win, though it doesn't say how that return is measured. Any optional side bet is separate from the ante. Our Tri Card Poker page and what is Tri Card Poker answer cover the rules.
What is the ante in Caribbean Stud Poker?
The Caribbean Stud ante is your opening bet against the dealer, and continuing costs twice that amount again as a raise. A $10 ante therefore puts $30 at risk on any hand you play. Under standard rules, if the dealer fails to qualify with a minimum hand, the ante is paid and the raise is returned, but RTG's exact qualifying and payout rules weren't published in our sources, so check the help screen. No RTP figure for RTG's version was found. Our Caribbean Stud Poker page explains the game, and kicker covers how ties can be settled.
What does ante up mean at a casino?
To ante up means to put your opening bet down before the cards come out, so you're in the hand. At a poker room table, everyone antes into a shared pot. At a casino table game such as Tri Card Poker or Caribbean Hold'em, you ante against the house, and the dealer or software won't deal you in until that bet is placed. Online, it simply means placing a chip on the ante circle and pressing deal. The phrase has spread into everyday speech for paying your share. Our Caribbean Hold'em page and casino glossary list related terms.
How big should my ante be for my bankroll?
Size your ante to the full stake you may bet on a hand, not just the ante itself. In Caribbean Stud, a $10 ante can turn into a $30 hand, so a $300 session budget covers only 10 hands played to the end. In Tri Card Poker the same $10 ante means up to $20 a hand, or 15 full hands from $300. Many players set the ante at a small slice of the session budget so a losing run doesn't end play in minutes. Our bankroll entry and gambling budget guide show how to set limits.
Can I play ante poker games on my phone?
Yes, at casinos that offer these games in a mobile browser, though the partners list no dedicated apps. SlotoCash says no app or software is needed and suggests a home-screen shortcut, and its site names Tri-Card Poker among its games. Silver Oak offers instant play and a browser mobile casino for iPhone, Android and tablets, plus a Windows download. Which table games load on mobile varies, so check the lobby on your device. Our mobile casino guide and can I play on my phone answer explain browser play.
Are online ante poker games legal in New Jersey?
Yes, at casinos licensed by New Jersey's Division of Gaming Enforcement, which listed nine internet gaming permits held by seven entities as of September 22, 2026. Those sites tie online play to Atlantic City casino licensees, and which poker-style table games they carry is up to each operator. Offshore casinos, including the partners on this page, hold no New Jersey license, so they sit outside the state's protections. New Jersey is one of seven states that license real-money online casinos. The New Jersey online casinos hub and offshore vs state-licensed casinos guide explain the difference.
