Baccarat banker meaning: the Banker is one of the two hands dealt in baccarat, and a Banker bet is a wager that this hand will finish closer to nine than the Player hand. It wins slightly more often than the Player hand, so winning Banker bets usually pay even money minus a 5% commission.
The Banker is a hand, not the casino; you can bet on it like any other side.
Under standard eight-deck rules the Banker hand wins about 45.86% of hands.
A winning $100 Banker bet usually pays $95 after the 5% commission.
That leaves a house edge of about 1.06%, the lowest of the main baccarat bets.

Baccarat banker meaning: a hand, not the house
The name trips up many new players. In our casino terms glossary, the Banker is simply one of the two hands the dealer lays out each round; the other is the Player. Neither one belongs to you or to the casino. You choose to back the Banker, the Player or a tie, and the cards are then dealt by fixed rules.
The name is a holdover from older forms of the game, where one participant really did hold the bank. In modern casino and online baccarat, the house banks every bet, and "Banker" is just a label for the hand that draws second.
How the Banker hand draws its third card
Each hand gets two cards. Tens and face cards count as zero, aces as one, and only the last digit of the total matters, so 7 + 8 = 15 counts as 5. A total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards is a natural, and the round ends. Otherwise the Player hand acts first: it draws on 0–5 and stands on 6 or 7.
The Banker then follows a fixed table that looks at its own total and, if the Player drew, at the Player's third card. That extra information is why the Banker wins more often.

Banker bet odds and house edge in dollars
Under standard eight-deck rules, the Banker hand wins about 45.86% of rounds, the Player about 44.62% and ties about 9.52%. A tie returns Banker and Player bets as a push.
Here's the arithmetic on a $100 Banker bet. You win $95 about 45.86% of the time and lose $100 about 44.62% of the time: (0.4586 × $95) − (0.4462 × $100) = $43.57 − $44.62 = about −$1.06. That's a 1.06% house edge.

Without the commission, a Banker bet would favor the player, which is why casinos charge it. Our commission entry explains how the 5% is collected and why it's built into the payout.
A Banker bet session, worked through
Say you play 100 hands at $10 on the Banker. That's $1,000 wagered, and at a 1.06% edge the average cost is about $10.60. The same session on the tie would average about $143.60, which shows how much bet choice matters in baccarat.
Set a session budget first, for example $100 for 100 hands at $10.
Place your chip on the Banker area; there are no decisions once the cards are dealt.
On a win, expect $9.50 profit on a $10 bet, not $10, because of the commission.
On a tie, your Banker stake comes back; on a Player win, it's lost.
Stop at your planned limit rather than raising stakes after losses.
Following streaks, such as backing the Banker after it wins three times, doesn't change the odds. Each round is dealt independently in RNG baccarat. Our gambler's fallacy guide explains why patterns on a scoreboard don't predict the next hand.
No-commission baccarat and other Banker variations
Some versions drop the 5% commission and instead change the payout on one specific result, often paying half on a Banker win with a total of six. That changes the edge, usually upward, so check the rules screen before assuming a no-commission game is cheaper.
RealTime Gaming lists a Baccarat game, but third-party sources don't publish its deck count, commission rule or RTP, so check the game's help screen. The figures on this page are the standard eight-deck math, not a published figure for RTG's version. For other low-edge choices, see our best casino game to win answer.

Baccarat is reported in the RTG lobbies of Planet 7, Royal Ace and Slot Madness, so these are the partners that fit; check the lobby before depositing, because the game list can change. All three are offshore casinos not licensed or regulated by any US state, so there's no state regulator to hear complaints and no state protection of balances. Check your state's law. Welcome bonuses are built for slots, and baccarat is often excluded: Blockonomi's Planet 7 review (opens in a new tab) says it doesn't count on Planet 7's free chip, and Silver Oak's terms (opens in a new tab) exclude it from bonus play. Frequently asked questions
What does banker mean in baccarat?
In baccarat, the Banker is one of the two hands dealt each round, and you can bet that it will finish with the higher total. It isn't the casino's hand, and you don't have to act as the bank. The Banker draws its third card by a fixed table that depends partly on the Player's third card. Our how to play baccarat guide shows a full round.
Why does the banker bet charge a commission?
The Banker bet charges a commission because the Banker hand wins slightly more often than the Player hand. Under standard eight-deck rules it wins about 45.86% of rounds against about 44.62%, so paying even money would give players the edge. Taking 5% of each win turns that into a house edge of about 1.06%. Our commission entry explains the charge in more detail.
Is betting on the banker always best?
Under standard rules, yes: the Banker bet has the lowest house edge in baccarat, about 1.06%, against about 1.24% for the Player and about 14.36% for the tie. That doesn't make it a winning bet over time; it just loses the least on average. No-commission versions can change the numbers, so check the rules. Compare games in our house edge explained guide.
How much does a banker bet pay?
A winning Banker bet usually pays even money minus a 5% commission, so a $20 bet returns $19 in profit plus your $20 stake. If the round is a tie, your Banker bet is returned. If the Player wins, you lose the $20. Some no-commission tables pay differently on certain totals. Our baccarat game page covers payouts and variants.
Can I use a casino bonus to bet on the banker?
Usually not, because offshore casino bonuses are mainly for slots and baccarat is a common exclusion. Silver Oak's terms list baccarat among excluded games, and third-party reviews say it doesn't count on Planet 7's free chip. Betting excluded games with bonus funds can void winnings. Check our game weighting entry and the casino's terms before you play.
Can you predict banker streaks?
No, you can't predict Banker streaks in online baccarat. RNG games deal each round independently, so a run of Banker wins says nothing about the next hand, and scoreboards only record the past. Betting more after a streak only raises the amount at risk. Read our gambler's fallacy guide to see why patterns mislead players.
What is the RTP of the banker bet in baccarat?
The Banker bet returns about 98.94% of the money wagered over the long run under standard eight-deck rules, which is 100% minus its 1.06% house edge. The Player bet returns about 98.76%, and the tie about 85.64%. On $1,000 of Banker bets, that points to about $989.40 coming back on average, though a short session can land far from it. RTG doesn't publish an RTP for its Baccarat game, so these are standard figures rather than the studio's own. Our RTP entry and what is RTP answer explain how the percentage works.
How is the 5% banker commission worked out on a $50 bet?
On a winning $50 Banker bet, the 5% commission is $2.50, so you collect $47.50 in profit plus your $50 stake. The commission applies only to wins; losing bets and ties aren't charged. Online versions usually take it straight out of each payout, which is why the payout is shown as 0.95:1. Over a session it adds up: 20 winning Banker bets of $50 would mean $50 in commission. Our commission entry explains how tables collect the charge, and the baccarat game page covers payouts on each bet.
What is a natural for the banker in baccarat?
A natural is a two-card total of 8 or 9, and when either hand has one, the round ends with no more cards drawn. If the Banker shows a natural and the Player doesn't, the Banker bet wins and pays 0.95:1. A 9 beats an 8, and two naturals of the same total are a tie, which returns Banker and Player bets. Naturals are settled before the third-card rules come into play. Our how to play baccarat guide walks through scoring, and the push entry explains what happens to your stake on a tie.
Does the banker always draw on 5 in baccarat?
No, the Banker draws on 5 only in some situations. If the Player stood on 6 or 7, the Banker draws on 0 to 5, so it does draw on 5. If the Player took a third card, the Banker with 5 draws only when that card is a 4, 5, 6 or 7, and stands otherwise. On 6, it draws only against a Player third card of 6 or 7, and on 7 it always stands. The software applies these rules for you. Our baccarat game page and casino math basics guide explain why the rules favor the Banker.
Does the Martingale system work on the baccarat banker bet?
No, and the commission makes it slightly worse on the Banker bet than on even-money bets. Under Martingale you double after each loss, expecting one win to recover everything. Lose $10, then win a $20 Banker bet, and you collect $19, so you're up $9 rather than $10. A longer losing run grows fast: five straight losses from $10 means a sixth bet of $320, and table limits can stop the progression. The 1.06% edge stays the same throughout. Our Martingale entry and is Martingale a good strategy answer go further.
How many decks are used for the banker bet in online baccarat?
It depends on the game, and RealTime Gaming doesn't publish the deck count for its Baccarat. The figures on this page use standard eight-deck math, where the Banker wins about 45.86% of rounds. Rule changes such as no-commission payouts can move the edge, so read the game's help screen before you play. RNG baccarat also deals each round independently, so card counting doesn't apply. Our shoe entry explains how decks are held at live tables, and how RNGs work covers software dealing.
Is online baccarat legal in West Virginia?
Yes, real-money online casino games, which can include baccarat, are legal in West Virginia at sites licensed under the West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act. The West Virginia Lottery Commission regulates them, state law caps the number of licenses at five, and a third-party report gives the interactive wagering age as 21. Which table games each licensed site carries is up to the operator. Offshore casinos, including the partners here, hold no West Virginia license. Our West Virginia online casinos hub and state regulators page cover the licensed market.
