Pai Gow meaning

Pai Gow meaning: Pai Gow is a centuries-old Chinese game played with tiles, and the name now most often refers to Pai Gow Poker, the casino card game built on it. In both, you split what you're dealt into a high hand and a low hand and try to beat the dealer with both. The name comes from the Chinese 牌九, roughly "tile nine", after the tile game's best score.

Key takeaways

  • Pai Gow is a Chinese tile game; online casinos mostly offer Pai Gow Poker, its card-game cousin.
  • In Pai Gow Poker you set seven cards into a five-card high hand and a two-card low hand.
  • Under standard rules, win both hands for even money minus a commission, usually 5%; win one for a push.
  • Silver Oak's terms exclude Pai Gow Poker from bonus play, and RTG publishes no return figure for its version.

Pai Gow meaning and where the name comes from

Pai Gow began as a game of Chinese dominoes, using 32 tiles. Players arrange their tiles into two pairs, a high and a low, and each is scored by its points, with nine the top score. That's where the name comes from: 牌九 is usually rendered as "tile nine" or "card nine".

In American casinos the card version took over. Pai Gow Poker keeps the two-hand idea but replaces tiles with a deck of cards and poker hand rankings. When US players search for Pai Gow meaning, it's usually this card game they've seen in a lobby. RealTime Gaming makes a Pai Gow Poker title, according to GamblingNews' list of RTG table games (opens in a new tab).

How Pai Gow Poker works under standard rules

  1. Place your bet. You and the dealer each get seven cards.
  2. Split your cards into a five-card high hand (the back) and a two-card low hand (the front).
  3. Make sure the five-card hand outranks the two-card hand; if it doesn't, the hand is fouled under standard rules.
  4. The dealer sets its cards by a fixed method called the house way.
  5. Compare: win both hands and you're paid; win one and lose one and it's a push; lose both and you lose the bet.

Exact ties on a hand, called copies, go to the dealer in standard rules. The joker usually works as a semi-wild card that can complete a straight or flush or otherwise counts as an ace. RTG's rules weren't published in the sources available to us, so read the help screen in your game. For a refresher on rankings, see the royal flush and kicker entries.

Pai Gow Poker commission and pushes in dollars

Under standard rules, a winning bet pays even money minus a commission, usually 5%. Win both hands on a $20 bet and you collect $20 − $1 = $19 in profit. Win one and lose one and your $20 comes back with nothing added.

That mix is why Pai Gow Poker has a slow pace of losses compared with many casino games: a lot of hands end as pushes. It still has a house edge, coming from the commission and the dealer winning copies. RTG doesn't publish a return figure for its version, so we can't price an hour of play; the formula is total bet × house edge. Our commission entry explains how commissions shift the edge.

Pai Gow meaning for bonus play

Pai Gow Poker is a poor fit for bonus wagering. Silver Oak's terms (opens in a new tab) list Pai Gow Poker among games excluded from bonus play, alongside baccarat, craps and roulette. SlotoCash's bonus terms (opens in a new tab) exclude table games by default and say play on other games voids promotion winnings. Both are first-party terms.

If you want to play Pai Gow Poker, the clean option is to play with your own deposit and no active bonus, so there's no risk of breaking a rule. Our table games bonus page and game weighting entry explain why table games are restricted.

  • Ante: the opening bet in many poker-based casino games.
  • Push: a tie where your stake is returned, common in Pai Gow Poker.
  • Baccarat banker: another bet that carries a commission.
  • RNG: the software that shuffles and deals online cards.

Frequently asked questions

What does Pai Gow mean?

Pai Gow is the name of a Chinese domino game and, by extension, the casino card game Pai Gow Poker. The Chinese 牌九 is usually translated as "tile nine" or "card nine", because nine is the best point score in the tile game. Online, the name almost always means the poker version. Our Pai Gow Poker page covers that game.

Is Pai Gow the same as Pai Gow Poker?

No. Traditional Pai Gow uses 32 Chinese tiles arranged into two pairs, while Pai Gow Poker uses a 52-card deck plus a joker and seven cards set into a five-card and a two-card hand. Both share the two-hand idea of beating the dealer twice. US casino lobbies mainly offer the card game. See how to play Pai Gow Poker.

How do you win at Pai Gow Poker?

Under standard rules, you win when both your five-card hand and your two-card hand beat the dealer's. Win one and lose one and it's a push; ties on a hand go to the dealer. Wins pay even money minus a commission, usually 5%. No strategy removes the house edge, so set a budget; our house edge entry explains why.

Why is there a commission in Pai Gow Poker?

The commission, usually 5% of a winning bet under standard rules, is one of the ways the casino builds its edge into the game, alongside the dealer winning exact ties. On a $20 win you'd collect $19. Check the help screen of your game for its exact rule. Our commission entry explains how it compares with baccarat.

Can I use a bonus on Pai Gow Poker?

Usually not. Silver Oak's own terms list Pai Gow Poker among games excluded from bonus play, and SlotoCash's terms exclude table games by default and say play on other games voids promotion winnings. Playing it with an active bonus can cost you your winnings. Check the terms first; our table games bonus page covers the usual rules.

What is the house way in Pai Gow?

The house way is the fixed method the dealer uses to split its seven cards into a high and low hand. Online games often offer it as an option for your own hand too, which removes setting errors. It doesn't change the commission or the dealer's edge on ties. Our how to play Pai Gow Poker guide explains setting hands.

Is Pai Gow Poker legal to play online in New Jersey?

Online casino games are legal in New Jersey only at sites approved by the Division of Gaming Enforcement, which listed nine internet gaming permits held by seven entities on September 22, 2026. Each licensed site sets its own game list, so check whether Pai Gow Poker is offered there. The offshore casinos on this page hold no New Jersey license, and a 2025 state law makes running an unregulated online gambling site for New Jersey users a crime for the operator. See our New Jersey online casino guide and the comparison of player protections offshore vs licensed.

How much is the Pai Gow Poker commission on a $50 bet?

On a $50 bet that wins both hands, a standard 5% commission is $2.50, so you collect $47.50 in profit instead of $50. The commission is charged only on winning bets, never on pushes or losses. Over 20 winning hands at $50, those deductions add up to $50, which is the price of one whole winning hand. That steady trim is part of how the game builds its edge, along with the dealer winning exact ties. Check your game's help screen for its exact rate, and see the commission meaning entry and our casino math basics guide.

Is Pai Gow Poker a good game for a small bankroll?

Pai Gow Poker suits a small bankroll better than many games, because frequent pushes return your stake and slow down how fast money moves. Each push means the round ends level, so a $10 bettor can play many hands without big swings. It still costs money over time through the commission and the dealer winning copies, and RTG doesn't publish a return figure for its version, so the hourly cost can't be priced exactly. Set a budget and a time limit before you sit down. Our bankroll management guide and session meaning entry help you plan one.

Can I play Pai Gow Poker on my phone at RTG casinos?

You can usually play Pai Gow Poker on a phone through the casino's mobile browser, if the casino carries the game. Silver Oak's own site describes a browser mobile casino for iPhone, Android and tablets, SlotoCash says it needs no app, and third-party reviews report Planet 7 runs in mobile browsers too. None lists which table games appear in its mobile lobby, so confirm Pai Gow Poker is there before depositing. Our mobile casino guide and the Silver Oak mobile page explain browser play and home-screen shortcuts.

Is there live dealer Pai Gow Poker at RTG casinos?

Live dealer Pai Gow Poker isn't reported at the RTG casinos on this page, so the version you'd find there is a digital game run by a random number generator. Third-party listings say Silver Oak and Planet 7 have no live dealer section at all. The RNG version deals cards from a virtual deck and settles hands instantly, which means more hands per hour and more commission paid over a session. Read do RTG casinos have live dealer and our RNG meaning entry for how digital card games deal.

What does the joker mean in a Pai Gow hand?

In standard Pai Gow Poker, the joker is a semi-wild card: it can complete a straight or a flush, and otherwise it counts as an ace. That makes it valuable without being fully wild, so it can't turn a pair of kings into three kings. The deck is 52 cards plus that single joker under standard rules. RTG's rules weren't published in the sources available to us, so read the help screen in your game for its joker rule. Our Pai Gow Poker game page and wild symbol meaning entry compare how wild cards work.

What does a copy mean in Pai Gow?

A copy is an exact tie between your hand and the dealer's hand, and under standard Pai Gow Poker rules copies go to the dealer. If your two-card hand ties the dealer's two-card hand exactly, that half counts as a loss. Copy one hand and win the other, and the round is a push; copy one and lose the other, and you lose the bet. This rule is one source of the house edge, alongside the commission. Check the help screen for your version, and see our push meaning and house edge entries.
